Hello all, Prof. Justine Cassell [1] from Carnegie Mellon University will be giving a Tux talk on Tuesday, March 10th and visit the lab Wednesday afternoon, March 10. And within conversational commerce the new buzzword is "empathy" - systems as diverse as smart speakers and websites that generate insurance quotes are said to be empathetic. However, as Inigo Montoya so aptly said "I do not think it means what you think it means." In this talk I'll discuss where conversational interfaces have come from, where they are today, and where they could go tomorrow if we learn how to really create bonds between computational systems and their users Bio Justine Cassell is currently on leave from Carnegie Mellon to hold the founding international chair at the PRAIRIE Institute on Interdisciplinary Research in AI, in Paris, France. Before going on leave, she was Associate Dean of Technology Strategy and Impact in the School of Computer Science at CMU, co-director of the Simon Initiative on Technology-Enhanced Learning, and co-director, with Professor Tom Mitchell, of the Yahoo (Oath/Verizon) InMind Project on the Future of Personal Assistants. She is Director Emerita of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at CMU. Previously Justine was faculty at Northwestern University where she founded the Technology and Social Behavior Doctoral Program and Research Center. Before that she was a tenured professor at the MIT Media Lab. Justine has received the MIT Edgerton Prize, Anita Borg Institute Women of Vision award, the AAMAS Test of Time paper award, and the National Academy of Sciences Henry and Bryna David Prize. While preventing or minimizing AI biases and harms is justifiably the subject of intense study in academic, industrial and even legal communities, an approach centered on acknowledging and planning for AI-based failures has the potential to shed new light on how to develop and deploy responsible AI-based systems. In this talk, I will discuss the sociotechnical nature of several inherent and unavoidable AI failures and why it is important for the industry to systematically and proactively identify, assess, and mitigate harms caused by such failures in our AI-based products and services. I will then present Microsoft’s recently released Guidelines for Human-AI Interaction and how we’ve been using them at Microsoft to help teams think through and prepare for different types of AI failures. Kaiton Williams, Eric Corbett and I are happy to announce we are organizing the second research Summer School for Designing Technology for Social Impact, targeted to PhD and PhD-bound students from ethnically underrepresented minorities. The idea behind the summer school is that voices imagining what technology could be and shaping how it emerges are limited, with underrepresented communities often marginalized in tech discourses. Researchers and designers from these communities therefore have a central role to play in articulating social impact and potential for communities that other technology developers might forget or know nothing about, creating alternative, innovative visions for what technology can be in this world. This summer research workshop is designed to foster a strong cohort of researchers from underrepresented backgrounds working on topics related to the social impact of information technology. Hi everyone, This is just a reminder that we will be curling for the end-of-year party tomorrow between 2-4pm at Leaside Curling Club and then going to the Rose and Crown bar at Yonge/Eglinton after that, there will be food and drinks. *Reminder*: each person should *bring a pair of clean indoor shoes* to change into before going out onto the ice. As well, each person should wear warm stretchy clothing and bring a pair of gloves to wear in the ice shed. The party will be happening on *December 20th, 2019*. I have 4 sheets of ice booked for curling at the *Leaside Curling Club from* *2-4 PM*, address: (you should learn Google) 1075 Millwood Rd, M4G 1X6. Each sheet accommodates up to 8 people (can be more, but only 8 play) with instructors. Make sure to arrive a bit beforehand. I leave it to you to figure out how to get there, but I will leave from the lab with a group. (I'll send more details about timing closer to the date). I have also made a reservation at *the Rose and Crown* on Yonge/Eglinton for *5 PM*. There is a pool table and TVs there. There is a TTC bus that goes directly from Leaside to Yonge/Eglinton that comes every 20 minutes or so and takes 30 minutes, but I'll let everyone figure out transportation themselves. Here are some general guidelines for curling (copy paste): Proper clothing and footwear should be worn at all times on the curling ice. Clothing should be warm and loose fitting. If you do not have curling shoes, clean indoor running shoes with a rubber flat sole (no heel) are appropriate. Step-on sliders will be supplied by the club for those not owning curling shoes. Street shoes and boots which are worn to the club ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. Although not mandatory, Leaside Curling Club strongly recommends the wearing of protective head gear for all individuals using the curling facility. *IMPORTANT: *transportation is not taken care of for you, sorry!
