He explores novel interactive computing technologies and their impact on human-computer interaction. In particular, his research interests include augmented reality, touch and gesture-based interfaces, depth sensing, and display technologies. He helped found and lead the Microsoft Touch Mouse project and he has extensively collaborated with the Surface Computing group at Microsoft. He has been active in the human-computer interaction field, authoring more than 50 scientific papers and journal articles, as well as serving as the General Chair (2014) and the Program Chair (2012) of the ACM Conference on User Interface Systems and Technology (UIST). For his publications, he received several best paper awards at both ACM UIST and ACM SIGCHI. Before joining Microsoft, he obtained his PhD at Columbia University. Interacting with Photons: Creating Interactive Projected Augmented Reality Experiences We have been investigating how depth sensing cameras and projectors can be used to enable highly immersive and interactive augmented reality experiences. In contrast to head-worn displays, such projector + depth camera systems offer the ability to create wide-field-of-view immersive augmented reality experiences without the user having to wear any additional gear. While large-scale projection mapping installations have become familiar forms of artistic expression, our work showcases how one can leverage the unique capabilities of today's depth cameras and fast GPUs to enable real-time projection mapping on any surface (including deformable moving surfaces), thus enabling truly interactive experiences. In this talk, I present a progression of research prototypes, each one exploring a different use scenario, while discussing the challenges in authoring such experiences. Hi Everyone, Arvind Gupta (website <https://www.cs.ubc.ca/people/arvind-gupta>) will be visiting the DGP tomorrow(Thursday) for some demos from *2:00 to 3:30*. Arvind is a former president of the University of British Columbia and has been appointed distinguished visiting professor in computer science at the University of Toronto for the 2015-2016 academic year. Thanks, Peter Hamilton BIO: Professor Arvind Gupta was named the 13th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia on March 12, 2014. A professor of Computer Science at UBC since 2009, he is a well-regarded expert in research and innovation policy with a proven record of accomplishment in building meaningful research collaborations. Professor Gupta has spoken frequently on research and innovation policy across Canada with public, private and academic audiences. He is a regular contributor to the national dialogue through opinion editorials on international collaboration and recruitment, competitiveness, innovation and productivity. >From 2000 to 2014, he was the CEO and Scientific Director of Mitacs, a national Canadian not-for-profit research organization dedicated to developing the next generation of innovators with vital scientific and business skills in partnership with academia, companies and government. Since 2012, Professor Gupta has been a member of the Government of Canada’s Science, Technology and Innovation Council (STIC) an advisory body that provides external policy advice on science and technology issues and produces regular national reports measuring Canada's science and technology performance against international standards of excellence. In 2010, he was appointed to the six-member Jenkin’s expert panel to review federal government support to industrial research and development. The recommendations from this report have had a significant impact on federal innovation policy. Professor Gupta obtained a PhD from the University of Toronto in 1991. His research expertise is in the field of combinational algorithms with applications to fields such as bioinformatics, which utilizes computer science to understand genetics. He has co-authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and supervised 30 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

Hello all, As you know, DGP is committed to providing a stimulating environment for students and staff that includes ways to play and explore and try new funky gadgets. As such, there is a small item in the budget for buying fun toys like quadcopters, binary clocks, infectious disease oozes, magnetic putty, etc. As your newly minted Toymaster, I have created a Google Doc for suggested toys for us to order. In the coming term, our regular HCI meetings will take place from 12:30-2pm on Tuesdays. There is no poll this time around because we are synchronizing with the new "Tux" HCI group. This group spans Schools: Waterloo, Ryerson, U of T, Queens, and labs: Autodesk & Tactual Labs (so far!). It meets every second week, usually at MaRS, though sometimes here at DGP. We will have our internal HCI meeting in the same slot on the other Tuesdays. All of the HCI faculty at DGP have signed-on to participate. Tux's website will be up next week, and will show the schedule of talks, including some exciting speakers from top HCI research labs across North America. In the meantime, we will kick-off our internal meeting next week on Sept. 29 @ 12:30pm. Your only task for now is to please block-off 12:30-2 in your schedules (plus a bit of padding for travel to/from MaRS) through April. Thank you! -Daniel
