[HCI] Dr. Kentaro Toyama Grad Q&A

Hi all, You might have seen the announcement about the Grad Q&A with Dr. Kentaro Toyama on Thursday 4:30 PM in the DGP Meeting Room. I'd like to especially ask the HCI folks to attend this session. Dr. Toyama has an amazing story. He did vision research at Microsoft Research, winning the prestigious Marr award in 2003. In 2005, he moved to India, co-established Microsoft Research India and started a group on technologies to help the world's poorest. After 5 years of amazing work and co-founding the discipline of ICTD (which relates heavily to HCI), he left Microsoft and wrote a book on how technology alone cannot solve our biggest social problems. It's a great opportunity to talk to him and grill him with your questions. Best, Aakar

FYI, to HCI students, in case you don't get the dcs-all mails. You should make every attempt to attend the DLS talks. DLS talks are an important aspect to the educational experience you get here. We invite amazing speakers on a yearly basis who talk about extremely interesting work. Make sure you try to come on time for this (not ten after). There will be a session in the afternoon (4:30-5PM) for students to meet with Kentaro and talk with him as well. Please attend that. Also please sign up for a chance to demo to Kentaro via Haijun (demos will happen 5-6pm). Demo to Dr. Rogers,

Hi all, Dr. Rogers from UCL is visiting Toronto next week to give a TUX talk on Nov 8th and visit the lab on Nov 9th . And we will host her with demos from 10:30am to 4:00pm on Nov 9th . Dr. Rogers is a distinguished researcher in HCI and it will be a wonderful opportunity to show your excellent work in the research frontiers. Please let me know by tonight whether you want to give a demo to Dr. Rogers and your preferred time. The demo slot is usually 15 ~ 20 minutes, but it depends on how many demos we have at the end. Hi everyone, This is a reminder that our next HCI meeting will be held tomorrow (Nov 1) at 12:30 in the seminar room. We have two brainstorming sessions scheduled. Rachel, Caleb, and Varun would like a brainstorming session for their submission to the CHI Art Program. Seyong would like to get ideas from you about dealing with interactive UI features such as motion, gesture in design process. Here is a little background information: today’s user interaction design considers interactive features of user interface. The interests on motion, timing, animation, and gesture are incredibly increasing. However, with current tools and design system, there are limited ways of presenting those interactive features to users and co-workers. In this brainstorming, we will brainstorm and discuss about interaction techniques that will manipulate and manage those interactive features in the design process. In addition, Caleb and Jiannan would like to videotape the brainstorming sessions to gather some preliminary data for their study on communication and note-taking in the brainstorming process. Ken Perlin: The Coming Age of Computer Graphics [http://www.tux-hci.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/perlin-150x150.jpg] Abstract Sometime in the next five to ten years, millions of people will start wearing light-weight mixed reality glasses. Your hologlasses will be able to display extremely realistic 3D computer graphics, which will appear to exist in the world itself, and will be capable of locating and identifying the objects, people and places around you, wherever you go. This will be the dawn of what might be called the Age of Computer Graphics. Virtual objects will appear to float in the air between us, and young children will simply take for granted that they can draw in the air with their fingers, just as we now take for granted the magic of the telephone and the internet. There will be many consequent changes to our shared public space. Physical signs will gradually be replaced by virtual ones, and navigation aids we currently associate with Google Streetview will simply be part of our visual landscape. But the changes to the next generation will be far more profound. Children who grow up in a world where gesturing in the air produces visible results will start to evolve language itself. They will invent ways to communicate and interact with each other that we cannot yet imagine. In the intervening years, a continuum of experiments and prototyping experiences need to be done, to understand how people will socially engage with each other, and how they will go through their day while wearing their hologlasses. At the NYU Future Reality Lab, we are dedicated to creating those prototype, and to working with domain experts in many areas to understand the implications of the coming Age of Computer Graphics.
