While we all want to be informed, we do not want to experience this information as stress. It is not the information itself that is the problem, but the manner in which we are bombarded with information in forms that are often hard to interpret. One question is – how can we visualize information in a manner aids comprehension, and provokes interpretation, exploration and appreciation. This is a non-trivial challenge. How do we provide spatial representations of non-spatial data that are not only true to the data but help reveal patterns and characteristics of intrinsically non-spatial data such as text and tables of numbers? I will discuss these questions in context of my on-going research, noting how I have both influenced and been influenced by the emerging and changing trends and challenges in information visualization research. Biography: Sheelagh Carpendale is a professor at the University of Calgary where she holds a Canada Research Chair in Information Visualization and the NSERC/AITF/SMART Industrial Research Chair in Interactive Technologies. She has received many awards including the E.W.R. NSERC STEACIE Memorial Fellowship; a BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts Interactive Awards); an ASTech Innovations in Technology Award; and the CHCCS Achievement Award. She leads the Innovations in Visualization (InnoVis) research group and initiated interdisciplinary graduate programs in Computational Media Design. Her research draws upon her combined backgrounds in computer science and visual arts, benefiting from the interdisciplinary cross-fertilization to enable the design of innovative, people-centred information technologies. By studying how people interact with information both in work and social practices, she works towards designing more natural, accessible and understandable interactive visual representations of data. She combines information visualization, visual analytics and human-computer interaction with innovative new interaction techniques to better support the everyday practices of people who are viewing, representing, and interacting with information.

Hope to see you there, Nicole ----------------- "Declarative Interaction Design for Data Visualization” Arvind Satyanarayan, Stanford University Thursday, March 9, 2017, at 11:00 AM BA1220 (Bahen Centre, 40 St.George Street) Abstract: Interactive visualization is an increasingly popular medium for analysis and communication as it allows readers to engage data in dialogue. Hypotheses can be rapidly generated and evaluated in situ, facilitating an accretive construction of knowledge and serendipitous discovery. Yet, existing models of visualization relegate interaction to a second-class citizen: imperative event handling callbacks that are difficult to specify, and even harder to reason about. In this talk, I will introduce two new declarative languages that lower the threshold for authoring interactive visualizations, and enable higher-level reasoning about the design space of interactions. Reactive Vega is an expressive representation that is well-suited for custom, explanatory visualizations. It shifts the burden of execution from the user to the underlying streaming dataflow system. Vega-Lite builds on Vega to provide a higher-level grammar for rapidly specifying interactive graphics for exploratory analysis. Its concise format decomposes interaction design into semantic units that can be systematically enumerated. Together, these languages serve as platforms for further research into novel methods of expressing visualization design, and systems for interactive data analysis. And, critically, they provide a growing and engaged community to study their use with -- the Wikipedia and Jupyter communities, for instance, have embraced Vega and Vega-Lite to author interactive visualizations within articles and data science notebooks, respectively. Biography: Arvind Satyanarayan is a Computer Science PhD candidate at Stanford University, working with Jeffrey Heer and the University of Washington Interactive Data Lab. Arvind's research develops new declarative languages for interactive visualization, and leverages them in new systems for visualization design and data analysis. His work has been recognized with a Google PhD Fellowship, Best Paper Awards at IEEE InfoVis & ACM CHI, and has been deployed on Wikipedia to enable interactive visualizations within articles.

Hello everyone, We are going to have our HCI group meeting tomorrow at the usual place and the usual time (12.30 in the seminar room). This is normally a TUX talk time but the next TUX talk is actually happening the next week. In tomorrow’s meeting, Gazelle, Varun, and Jiannan are each going to lead a (relatively shorter) brainstorming session. Gazelle will lead a discussion on ‘addressing the barriers to physical activities in older adults’, Jiannan on the potential of sensing systems consisted of multiple portable cameras and other sensors. Hello everyone, We are going to have our biweekly HCI group meeting tomorrow at the usual time and place (12.30 in the seminar room). Zhen will lead a brainstorming session about ‘3D paper’. Below is a brief introduction about the topic from Zhen: The PDF version of a paper is perfect for printing, with proper fonts/line-spacing and compact figure/table layout. However, it is far from perfect in the digital world. I am interested in how to break the constraints of the physical layout (elements tiled on the 2D pages), and what interactions and visualizations should be included in such a 3D paper. See you then! Demos for Dr. Azam Khan, Autodesk

Hello all, Dr. Azam Khan <https://www.autodeskresearch.com/people/azam-khan> will be in the lab for demos after his TUX talk on Tuesday (Feb 20). He has a strong technical (but also broad) background, with research interests spanning HCI, data visualization, simulation, architecture, and sustainability. I imagine this could be of interest to many of you.
