Presentation begins at 1:00 pm. *The Design of Social Incentives * An increasingly common feature of online communities and social media sites is a mechanism for rewarding user achievements based on a system of social incentives, such as badges. Badges are given to users for particular contributions to a site, such as performing a certain number of actions of a given type. In this talk, I will speak about how badges can influence and steer user behavior on a site—leading both to increased participation and to changes in the mix of activities a user pursues on the site. I’ll introduce a formal model for reasoning about user behavior in the presence of badges, and in particular for analyzing the ways in which badges can steer users to change their behavior. To evaluate the main predictions of our model, we study the use of badges and their effects on the widely used Stack Overflow question-answering site, and find evidence that their badges steer behavior in ways closely consistent with the predictions of our model. We then investigate the problem of how to optimally place badges in order to induce particular user behaviors. Several robust design principles emerge from our framework that could potentially aid in the design of incentives for a broad range of sites. Finally, I’ll report on a large-scale deployment of badges as incentives for engagement in a MOOC, including randomized experiments in which the presentation of badges was varied across sub-populations. We find that badges significantly increased student engagement, with the magnitude of the increase varying with the saliency of the badge presentation. *Bio* Ashton Anderson (University of Toronto) is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Toronto, where he is also a Faculty Affiliate with the Vector Institute and a Research Fellow in Behavioural Economics. He received his PhD from Stanford University in 2015 and completed a postdoctoral appointment at Microsoft Research NYC in 2017. His research in computational social science focuses on questions in the increasingly vital intersection of data and society. Leveraging context and machine learning for the design of predictive and self-adaptive user experiences By leveraging machine learning techniques, digital channels are becoming more predictive and contextual. Through this evolution, user experience design is becoming more than just a two-dimensional user interface consideration. In this talk, Hossein will be talking about how data science and the synthesis of context from data, enable the design of a more adaptive and engaging user experience. He will demonstrate how his team is building tools enabling AI and Machine Learning to be used by non-computer and data scientists and how such capabilities creates a new ecology of services and users. The talk includes real examples and demos of how Fortune 500s are making their user experiences learnable. At the end, Hossein will be talking about his Augmented Eternity project at MIT Media Lab which is focused on enabling users to share expertise using AI. Bio Professor Hossein Rahnama is a recognized figure in ubiquitous and pervasive computing. His research explores artificial intelligence, mobile human-computer interaction, and the effective design of contextual services. In 2017, Hossein was recognized as one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40. In 2012, he was recognized by the MIT Technology Review as one of the world's top innovators under the age of 35 for his research in context-aware computing. The Smithsonian named Hossein as one of the top six innovators to watch in 2013. Hossein has 35 publications and 18 patents in ubiquitous computing, is serving on the board of Canadian Science Publishing, and was a Council Member of the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). Hossein is also a visiting professor at the Human Dynamics group at MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, MA. Then, Jacob will present an introduction to his research project on the design of interactive data comics that communicate narratives relevant to climate change and income inequality. Presentation begins at 1:00 pm. *Data-Driven Design: Beyond A/B Testing* A/B testing has become the de facto standard for optimizing design, helping designers craft more effective user experiences by leveraging data. A typical A/B test involves dividing user traffic between two experimental conditions (A and B), and looking for statistically significant differences in performance indicators (e.g., conversion rates) between them. In this talk, I’ll introduce three other data-driven methods — complementary to A/B testing — that can tie design choices to desired outcomes. Mining interactiondata from existing designscan provide comparative insights about patterns found in the wild, exposing designers to a greater space of divergent solutions than A/B testing. Lightweight prototypes with tight user feedback loops, or experimentation engines, can bootstrap product design involving technologies that are actively being developed (e.g., artificial intelligence, virtual/augmented reality), where both use cases and capabilities are not well-understood. Finally, generative modelstrained on a set of effective design examples can support predictive workflows that allow designers to rapidly prototype new, performant solutions. *Bio* Ranjitha Kumar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where she leads the Data-Driven Design group. Steve --- The Social Life of Environmental Data: Lessons from Crisis Informatics Robert Soden, University of Colorado Boulder http://robertsoden.io Talk: 11am, Thursday February 7th (room BA1210) Advances in algorithms, sensors, databases, and computing power in recent decades have led to the development of fundamentally new approaches in science and policy for supporting safe, healthy, and sustainable communities in the around the world. These new technologies promise to improve our ability to monitor the natural and built environments and more effectively respond to crisis and disaster, but they can also limit public participation in planning, focus attention only on what can be measured with current tools, and reinforce existing social inequalities. To realize the promise of emerging technologies, we need to develop a better understanding of how they intervene in the governance of complex technological and environmental challenges. In this talk, I will discuss my research in this area drawing from studies on flood hazard mapping Colorado, post-earthquake damage assessment in Nepal, and sea-level rise modeling the San Francisco Bay Area. I show that an expanded agenda for crisis informatics research that draws on insights from science and technology studies, design research, and the humanities can improve the development of technologies used for responding to environmental challenges. Robert Soden is a PhD Candidate in Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder working on crisis informatics, human-centered computing (HCC), and science and technology studies (STS). His research examines the implications of changing technologies on efforts to address environmental challenges including disasters and climate change. He holds a Master's Degree in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development from American University and Bachelor’s degrees in History and Political Science from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Prior to starting his PhD, Robert was a professional software developer and a consultant to the World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), where he launched the Open Data for Resilience Initiative, a worldwide effort to harness open data, open source software, and civic technology to improve disaster and climate risk management. His research has been awarded multiple best paper awards and honorable mentions at ACM’s CHI and CSCW, as well as other computing venues.
