**2:00 pm**, Thursday, 19 April 2018 Bahen 5187 Dear Colleagues, Please join us for a talk delivered by Dr. Gonzalo Ramos <https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/people/goramos/>, Senior Researcher at the Machine Teaching Group at Microsoft Research, and former dgp member! Machine Teaching: Opportunities at the intersection of ML and HCI Research. Thursday April 19, at 2:00PM at the DGP seminar room (BA5187) Abstract: Machine Learning (ML) algorithms extract knowledge from data and currently require model builders with significant knowledge of the learning algorithm. This limits the ability to meet the demand for ML models to the available number of ML experts. To satisfy this demand, we must increase the number of individuals that can create ML models by making the process of teaching machines direct and accessible for all. We argue that this is achievable through Machine Teaching (MT), which focuses on how to transfer knowledge from a person to a learning algorithm. MT follows and extends principles of programming and lives at the intersection of ML, HCI and software engineering. In this presentation, we will introduce the fundamentals of MT and articulate the opportunities within for HCI research. We argue MT introduces model explainability by design, is a logical extension of programming literacy, and is disruptive by bringing discipline to ML model-building. Bio: Gonzalo is a Senior Researcher at the Machine Teaching Group. His Research DNA is about Human-Computer Interaction (although he thinks Human-Information Interaction is a better, more humanistic term) and over the years he has acquired what has been reliably diagnosed as an incurable Design and Engineering problem. His passion is to empower people by making information and technology accessible, enjoyable, and useful to all. He does this by researching, rediscovering, designing and crafting solutions as appropriate. He loves interdisciplinary work that aims to solve hard problems, and that challenges him to learn. Gonzalo is a graduate from the University of Toronto’s DGP lab, as well as the Universidad de Buenos Aires. Prior to his position at MSR, he worked as a Senior Design Technologist and later UX Scientist at Amazon, and as a Scientist Microsoft. Dear All, This is a very short notice, but I hope you will be able to join Dr. Ashad Kabir (https://researchoutput.csu.edu.au/en/persons/dr-ashad-kabir) of Charles Sturt University of Australia in talk on April 11 at 10 am. He will be talking about "socially aware pervasive mobile application", which may be interesting to many of you (details below). Talk Title: Socially-Aware Pervasive Mobile Applications Time: 10 am, April 11, 2018 Venue: DGP Seminar Room (BA 5187), 5th Floor, Bahen Centre Bahen Centre for Information Technology, 40 George Street, Toronto, ON Abstract: Pervasive Social Computing is a novel collective paradigm derived from pervasive computing, social media, social networking, social signal processing and multimodal human-computer interaction. It aims to take advantage of human social context to enable the fulfilment of users' task on the move, ultimately promoting individual well-being and social productivity. With the increasing prevalence and features of advanced mobile devices, interest has grown in socially-aware mobile applications, where the applications will be aware of users' social context and be able to assist them in their daily activities. The key requirements to develop such applications are modelling, managing and reasoning about users' social contexts. In this presentation, I will discuss a novel framework to address the challenges in developing socially-aware mobile applications. The framework includes an approach to model, represent, reason about, and manage different types of social context, and a platform for acquiring, storing, provisioning and managing social context information to aid the development of socially-aware mobile applications. Biography: Dr Ashad Kabir is a Lecturer in Computer Science at Charles Sturt University, Australia. He received his PhD in Software Engineering from Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. He has more than ten years teaching and research experience in a number of universities including Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Deakin University (Australia), Swinburne University (Australia), University of Nantes (France), Pusan National University (South Korea), University of Chittagong (Bangladesh) and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Bangladesh). Over the years, Dr Kabir has been involved in a number of research projects from different industries/institutions, including Rolls-Royce (Singapore), Samsung (South Korea), INRIA (France) and Computer Associate (Australia). His research interests include human computer interaction, mobile data mining, context-aware adaptive systems, social context awareness, data/software behavior mining, smart mobile applications, and pervasive/ubiquitous computing. HCI Meeting Tomorrow

Hi folks, We have a HCI meeting tomorrow @ BA5187(DGP Seminar room) at 12:30pm - 2:00pm. In the meeting, people who submitted to recent conferences (UIST, VIS) will share their work with us. After that, all of us will share our summer research plan quickly. You don’t have to prepare slides, but if you want, it’s okay. Next week(Apr. 17th) meeting is reserved for CHI practice talks. Haijun, Rahul, Caleb(remotely), Nicole, Dina, Seongkook will have practices for their awesome CHI talks. Each of them will have 15 mins talk and 10mins feedbacks. Thus, next meeting will start earlier then usual, please secure your schedules about from 11:30AM to 2:30PM. There is no meeting during the CHI week.
