AI Deployments Accelerate Without Sufficient Intelligence: Opportunities for HCI Research After 35 years of ups and downs, AI finally achieved in the last two decades triumphs over the world's best humans in chess, Jeopardy, Go, and poker. Accelerating advances in deep leaning technology now bring actual or promised deployments in speech and face recognition, judgments of human potential, medical image processing, driverless cars, and automated warfare. But are these systems truly intelligent? Replacing simplistic definitions of intelligence with the more nuanced descriptions of Sternberg and Gardner suggests that the answer is "no". Thinking about what we should expect of intelligent agents, we must acknowledge the lack of algorithms that can explain the logic behind their actions so that we can understand their behaviour. This is required so that we can trust them, delegate responsibility for actions and accountability for errors, and expect their decisions that are just. Removing these limitations will require a healthy dose of HCI research and user experience innovation. My goal with this talk is to encourage audience members to work on these issues. Note: Ideas in this lecture are based in part on Chapter 11 of the forthcoming text: Computers and Society: Modern Perspectives, by Ronald M. Baecker, Oxford University Press, 2019. Bio Ronald Baecker is Director of the Technologies for Aging Gracefully Laboratory (TAGlab), Professor of Computer Science, and Bell Universities Laboratories Chair in Human-Computer Interaction. The focus of TAGlab activities is R&D in support of aging throughout the life course including cognition, communication, and social interaction. Collaborators include individuals from Baycrest, Columbia Medical School, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. He is also Affiliate Scientist with the Kunin-Lunenfeld Applied Research Unit of Baycrest (formerly, Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care), Adjunct Scientist with Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and founder of the Knowledge Media Design Institute at the University of Toronto. He has been named one of the 60 Pioneers of Computer Graphics by ACM SIGGRAPH, has been elected to the CHI Academy by ACM SIGCHI, and has been given the Canadian Human Computer Communications Society Achievement Award in May 2005. His B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. are from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Baecker is an active researcher, lecturer, and consultant on human-computer interaction and user interface design, user support, software visualization, multimedia, computer-supported cooperative work and learning, the Internet, entrepreneurship and strategic planning in the software industry, and the role of information technology in business. He has published over 175 papers and articles on topics in these areas. He is also the author or co-author of two published videotapes and of four books: . "Reading in Human-Computer Interaction: A Multidisciplinary Approach", . "Human Factors in Typography for More Readable Programs", . "Readings in Groupware and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work: Facilitating Human-Human Collabortation", and . "Reading in Human-Computer Interaction: Towards the Year 2000". He is the co-holder of 2 patents. Professor Baecker was the founder, CEO, and Chairman of HCR Corporation, a Toronto-based UNIX contract R&D and technology development and marketing firm, sold in 1990 to a U.S. competitor. He was also the founder of Expresto Software Corp, a firm specializing in structured visual communication explaining software and other complex technology. Expresto Software was sold in 2002 to Caseware International. Another entrepreneurial venture was a virtual non-profit foundation within the University of Toronto to distribute and support the open source ePresence Interactive Media rich media webcasting and archiving system, which then led to the formation of a start-up delivering ePresence products, services, and solutions, recently sold to Desire2Learn. Most recently, he was instrumental in the founding of MyVoice. HCI Meeting Rescheduling

Hi folks, From this May, Summer HCI Group meeting will start, but still finalizing the schedule. We have two options from Doodle votes, 1) Wed. 11:30 am - 1:00 pm . 2) Thu. 11:30 am - 1:00 pm . We may have flexible meeting time slots, since we have more availablity in summer. But having fixed meeting time help everyone schedule their research plan. He will give a talk at the dgp seminar on Thursday, April 19th between at 2PM. Hi everyone, Thanks for joining today and giving good feedbacks to our presenters. I am happy to (finally) leverage our Video Conference System other than the remote meetings. Yay. The presentations are recorded from the system, and I am sharing a dropbox link to download the videos. But I also observed that sometime it is hard to follow the talks and people can easily be distracted. We may keep this experiment and can figure out better solution for giving feedbacks on a presentation. I am not joining the talks at CHI this year, but hope everyone will have great experience @CHI as well as good talks. Machine Teaching: Opportunities at the intersection of ML and HCI Research. Thursday April 19, at 2:00PM at the DGP seminar room (BA5187) Abstract: Machine Learning (ML) algorithms extract knowledge from data and currently require model builders with significant knowledge of the learning algorithm. This limits the ability to meet the demand for ML models to the available number of ML experts. To satisfy this demand, we must increase the number of individuals that can create ML models by making the process of teaching machines direct and accessible for all. We argue that this is achievable through Machine Teaching (MT), which focuses on how to transfer knowledge from a person to a learning algorithm. MT follows and extends principles of programming and lives at the intersection of ML, HCI and software engineering. In this presentation, we will introduce the fundamentals of MT and articulate the opportunities within for HCI research. We argue MT introduces model explainability by design, is a logical extension of programming literacy, and is disruptive by bringing discipline to ML model-building. Bio: Gonzalo is a Senior Researcher at the Machine Teaching Group. His Research DNA is about Human-Computer Interaction (although he thinks Human-Information Interaction is a better, more humanistic term) and over the years he has acquired what has been reliably diagnosed as an incurable Design and Engineering problem. His passion is to empower people by making information and technology accessible, enjoyable, and useful to all. He does this by researching, rediscovering, designing and crafting solutions as appropriate. He loves interdisciplinary work that aims to solve hard problems, and that challenges him to learn. Gonzalo is a graduate from the University of Toronto’s DGP lab, as well as the Universidad de Buenos Aires. Prior to his position at MSR, he worked as a Senior Design Technologist and later UX Scientist at Amazon, and as a Scientist Microsoft. Dear All, Dr. Tesh Goyal (http://www.teshgoyal.info/), a Researcher at Google and a Visiting Scientist at Harvard, will visit our Department on April 17, 2018. He will deliver a talk at 4 pm on that day. Here are the information about his talk and his bio: Title of the talk: Designing for Collaborative Data Analysis, a Crime-Solving story ABSTRACT: My research vision is to enable expert and non-experts to successfully make sense of complex world problems. As a Human-Computer Interaction researcher, I iteratively focus on studying how sensemaking is performed to identify challenges in collaborative data analytics, design tools using computational techniques that overcome these challenges and evaluate my designs using human participants to inform subsequent designs. Solving crimes correctly is one such critical and life-altering problem. National Registry at the University of Michigan points out that almost 150 wrongfully incriminated folks were exonerated after having spent a non-trivial amount of their life in prison for crimes they did not commit in 2015 alone. During my work, I have discovered that sharing information socially, succumbing to cognitive biases, and lack of support afforded by changing interaction paradigms as key challenges in collaborative data analytics. Subsequently, I have iteratively developed multiple tools, including SAVANT REFLECTIVA, CROWDS4ANALYTICS, TEMPORA, and RAMPARTS to overcome these challenges. My approach establishes a research framework for creating rich collaborative data analytic systems by: (1) utilizing human generated analytic artifacts to inform and design the interactions (2) leveraging "off-the-shelf" natural language processing, sensors and crowds creatively to design intelligent data analytic tools, and (3) evaluating the effect of these designs in controlled settings to identify the cost vs. benefit of each design decision. BIO: Tesh (Nitesh) Goyal is a researcher at Google, where his collaborative sensemaking research has been used in Google Maps and Web experiences. Tesh's research develops design approaches to build novel data analytics tools that enhance information sharing, reduce biases using visualizations, minimize distractions using physiological data, and support collaborative problem-solving with crowds. His research has also contributed to the theory of Sensemaking by inventing Sensemaking Translucence as a design metaphor for a mirror that enables self-reflection. He received his MSc in Computer Science from University of California, Berkeley and RWTH Aachen under Prof. John Canny's advice, prior to receiving his PhD from Cornell University in Information Science where he was advised by Prof. Susan R. Fussell. His research has been supported by German Govt. Fellowship, National Science Foundation, and MacArthur Genius Grant. Frequently collaborating with industry (Google Research, Yahoo Labs, HP Labs, Bloomberg Labs), he has published 10 first-author papers in top-tier HCI conferences and journals (CHI, CSCW, JASIST, ICTD, ICIC and Ubicomp/IMWUT) and has received two best paper honorable nomination awards.
