[Tux] TUX 2017: Poster Day and Speaker Schedule

Hello Tux! We have some exciting announcements for upcoming events in 2017! TUX 2017 Research Poster Day - Tuesday February 7th, 2017 We are excited to officially announce TUX 2017 Research Poster Day. The event will take place on February 7th, 2017 in the MaRS auditorium starting at 10:30am. We would like to encourage you to share your research with the TUX community. We welcome submission of posters presenting previously published work, work-in progress, or other HCI projects of interest. We also encourage posters of recently accepted CHI 2017 papers, or other soon to be published works. The event will be followed by lunch and an invited Sander Series Lecture from Prof. Mark Gross, University of Colorado Boulder. Poster submissions, consisting of only a short description of the project, will be due on January 13th, 2017. She has received many awards including the E.W.R. NSERC STEACIE Memorial Fellowship<http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Prizes-Prix/Steacie-Steacie/Profiles-Profils/C…>; a BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts Interactive Awards); an ASTech Innovations in Technology Award<http://astech.ca/awardee/2013-ict-carpendale-dr-sheelagh>; and the CHCCS Achievement Award<http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~ksbooth/gi/archive/achvmnt2013.html>. Her research on information visualization, large interactive displays, and new media draws on her background in Computer Science, Art and Design (Simon Fraser University<http://www.sfu.ca/>, Emily Carr, Institute of Art and Design<http://www.eciad.bc.ca/eciadMain/>, Sheridan College, School of Design<http://www.sheridanc.on.ca/>). She has found the combined visual arts and computing science background invaluable in her information visualization research. The power of Alternate Representations To visualize data, one of the first steps is to develop a visual representation. This representation is a result of a mapping by which the data can be specified. Much has been said of about the power of these visual representations. Simon (1981) said that solving a problem is simply a matter of representing so as to make the solution transparent - implying that finding the right representation solves the problem. Card et al. (1998) said that interactive visual representations can amplify our cognition - can in effect make us smarter. In spite of this, the small box in the visualization creation pipeline that signifies the development of the visual representation remains one of the least unpacked. Through examples from my own work and others', I will discuss the power and potential of alternate visual representations.
