Demos - Computer Graphics Club

Hi all, The U of T Computer Graphics Club (undergrad interest group) is going to be coming by the lab Tuesday evening (29th) around 7pm for a tour, a few demos, etc. I know this is last minute, but if you're available and have something that you could demo, if you could please let either Rahul or me know so we can show the students all the cool stuff going on in our lab! This is a great way to spot promising students, generate interest for graphics and HCI, and practice talking about your work. Thanks for your help. Rorik

Presentation begins at 1pm. *Towards Real Reality Interfaces: From Interactive Light Fields to Programmable Matter* The current hype cycle of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) fails to recognize the inherent problem with these technologies: That they require alteration of the human perceptive channels in order to achieve the illusion of immersion in a virtual world. This requirement leads not only to bulky head mounted displays, but also to cumbersome tracking technologies to keep these displays in sync with the user's movements. At the Human Media Lab in Kingston, Ontario, we have been working since 2004 on an alternate approach: Modifying the real world, by turning physical materials into programmable software objects. I will begin with our first attempts, which utilized dynamic projection mapping to imbue solid objects, paper and textiles with high resolution interactive displays. Next, I will discuss our use of conforming flexible displays to create digital skins that allow objects of any shape to appear like a display without the need for projection or tracking. I will then discuss our recent progress in developing light field displays that allow glasses-free, head tracking free stereoscopic images with motion parallax on any object. I will conclude with a discussion of our work on programmable matter, via self-levitating physical voxels. *Bio* Dr. Roel Vertegaal is a Professor of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) at Queen’s University’s School of Computing in Kingston, Ontario, and director of the Human Media Laboratory. He is also CEO of Xuuk, inc., a startup that develops ubiquitous eye input applications. Roel’s first degree is in electronic music from Utrecht Conservatory in The Netherlands. He did an MSc in computing in Britain, studied design in the hague, and holds a PhD in HCI from Twente University. Roel is one of the world’s experts on eye communication between humans, and between humans and technology. His work on Attentive User Interfaces (AUI) [Google TechTalk] was featured in media across the globe, from Good Morning America to Scientific American. Roel helped create the first north-american conference on eye tracking (ACM ETRA), established alt.chi as the alternative papers venue at the annual ACM CHI conference and advised the National Academy of Sciences. his current interest is in Organic User Interfaces (OUI). “In the near future, a computer will have any shape or form, and flexible computer displays will start appearing on any product of any form. These challenges threaten to disrupt the lives of billions of people, and call into question our species’ ability to live sustainably. Fortunately, modern information systems offers a powerful means of tackling complex problems such as those involved in this suite of issues. In this talk, Professor Tomlinson will present his recent work in bringing computational tools to bear on problems of sustainability and disruption. In particular, he will describe a current research effort that seeks to enable a new approach to sustainable food security. Biography: Bill Tomlinson is a Professor of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine, and a researcher in the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology. He research areas include ICT for sustainability, computing withinlimits, human-computer interaction, and computer-supported learning. His book Greening through IT (MIT Press, 2010) examines the ways in which information technology can help people think and act on the broad scales of time, space, and complexity necessary for us to address the world's current environmental issues. In addition, he has authored dozens of papers across a range of journals and conferences in computing, the learning sciences, and the law. His work has been reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the LA Times, Wired.com, Scientific American Frontiers, CNN, and the BBC. In 2007, he received an NSF CAREER award and in 2008 he was selected as a Sloan Research Fellow. [HCI] Dr. Kentaro Toyama Grad Q&A

Hi all, You might have seen the announcement about the Grad Q&A with Dr. Kentaro Toyama on Thursday 4:30 PM in the DGP Meeting Room. I'd like to especially ask the HCI folks to attend this session. Dr. Toyama has an amazing story. He did vision research at Microsoft Research, winning the prestigious Marr award in 2003. In 2005, he moved to India, co-established Microsoft Research India and started a group on technologies to help the world's poorest. After 5 years of amazing work and co-founding the discipline of ICTD (which relates heavily to HCI), he left Microsoft and wrote a book on how technology alone cannot solve our biggest social problems. It's a great opportunity to talk to him and grill him with your questions. Best, Aakar

FYI, to HCI students, in case you don't get the dcs-all mails. You should make every attempt to attend the DLS talks. DLS talks are an important aspect to the educational experience you get here. We invite amazing speakers on a yearly basis who talk about extremely interesting work. Make sure you try to come on time for this (not ten after). There will be a session in the afternoon (4:30-5PM) for students to meet with Kentaro and talk with him as well. Please attend that. Also please sign up for a chance to demo to Kentaro via Haijun (demos will happen 5-6pm). Hi all, Dr. Rogers from UCL is visiting Toronto next week to give a TUX talk on Nov 8th and visit the lab on Nov 9th . And we will host her with demos from 10:30am to 4:00pm on Nov 9th . Dr. Rogers is a distinguished researcher in HCI and it will be a wonderful opportunity to show your excellent work in the research frontiers. Please let me know by tonight whether you want to give a demo to Dr. Rogers and your preferred time. The demo slot is usually 15 ~ 20 minutes, but it depends on how many demos we have at the end.
