Team,
If you think we might need a bunch of undergrads in the coming summer to do some development/analyzing, then let me know. We can write a proposal.
Best Regards, Ishtiaque

The Research Opportunities Program (ROP) are courses similar to CSC494/495 where undergraduates work on a research project individually or in very small groups for course credit (either 2nd year or 3rd year). There are some constraints on how many students in which year and there is some funding for the supervisor.
In the past, instructors proposed the course to the Associate Chair, Undergrad who did a first pass and then submitted to FAS for approval. This time faculty submit directly online and then the Associate Chair and FAS approve.
More information is below. The submission deadline is Jan 15, 2021.

Good afternoon ROP Faculty,
As announced yesterday in the Arts & Science Updates weekly communication, we are now accepting applications for the Research Opportunities Program (ROP) for Summer 2021 and Fall/Winter 2021-22. *The deadline for applications is January 15th, 2021.*
Some new changes we are introducing to ameliorate the process include:
- No second round of applications, all submissions are due January 15th, 2021.
- A new, electronic application form through the CLNx https://clnx.utoronto.ca/staff-faculty/facultystafflogin.htm platform.
- An electronic workflow process that allows Chairs or their designated approver to approve your project within the CLNx between January 15th – January 29th, 2021 (eliminates emails back and forth with your Chairs).
- ROPs can now be offered as 0.5 FCE H-course values. If you wish to host a shorter-term research course, you can indicate this in your application by selecting Fall 2021 term (H-course) or Winter 2022 term (H-course). All Summer 2021 courses will remain as 1.0 FCE Y courses. Arts & Science faculty hosting H-course ROPs will receive half of the regular stipend.
- For faculty wishing to tweak or overhaul your Student Assessment marking schemes, we have created some sample templates https://utoronto.sharepoint.com/:w:/s/001T_ASDOELOS/EQfaEbem62lGjnlc7BNWhXUBLsWYPNAt4GXCLixBC-IMxQ?e=IF3qbZ based on best practices you may find helpful. You will need to complete a blank assessment template https://utoronto.sharepoint.com/:w:/s/001T_ASDOELOS/Ea4DNwSQ9-pNhZb7FcudpvIBJYFt7l80lU2_pARPk5lmOw?e=qTBxM1 and upload this as part of your CLNx application.
All detailed information on the new 2021-22 ROP cycle can be found on our website https://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/research-opportunities-programs/research-opportunities-program, which includes the new information on faculty eligibility, stipend changes, the updated timeline, and supplemental guides on how to apply through the CLNx https://utoronto.sharepoint.com/:w:/s/001T_ASDOELOS/EVyhyDHHLONAh3ERbp0gbbwB0xKBK6QNDfI3VtrnXKJHlw?e=OEQGlY and assess ROP students.
For those who would like a quick, 30-minute tutorial on the overall program and how to apply through the CLNx, I encourage you to register for one of three identical ROP Info Sessions designed for faculty and department administrative staff:
- Friday, November 27, 11–11:30 am - Wednesday, December 2, 4–4:30 pm - Tuesday, January 5, 2–2:30 pm

We are committed to offering as many quality research opportunities to our undergraduates as possible. We understand this has been an extremely challenging academic year for in-person research activities. We thank those of you who have persevered or switched to remote delivery, and for those who made the tough decision to cancel your projects, we hope you will consider re-joining the program again in 2021. Please note that, while we are hopeful that all in-person research will be able to proceed in 2021, permission will depend on public health guidelines at the time of the activities.
Thank you so much for your continued support, I look forward to your submissions and am available to answer any questions and assist wherever possible.
Warm regards,
Christine Ovcaric, MA Ed
