Hi Everyone! Today we have a research focused HCI meeting. This week we'll spend the first half having somewhat of a roundtable discussion around what forward progress in graduate studies mean, and why mental health is as much a part of research as learning to write an abstract. Then we'll finish off by going around and having a few lab members speak on what research they have been working on over the summer. If anybody has any other ideas for what we can do with these meetings or wants to use some of the time to do a group brainstorm please send me a message and we can arrange that! Best, Blaine

For both awards, students’ research must be closely related to the general research areas carried out by researchers at Microsoft. I am reaching out in relation to a project that I'm working on with a collaborator on secure (fully anonymous) survey design in organizations. Currently, we're working in relation to COVID, but the ideas are more broadly applicable. The basic idea for COVID is that organizations can adopt indirect survey methods that provide plausible deniability to encourage their employees to report COVID exposure and to take sick leave, while minimizing the chance that employees face stigma from coworkers or managers due to the possibility that they have COVID-19. Given the urgency around COVID, we are writing a policy-oriented article for the Harvard Business Review that we hope will persuade some organizations to adopt this type of policy. We want to accompany the article with a website and a set of implementation tools (public goods) that organizations can use to implement the policy. We plan to use Jekyll and to host the website on github. As of now, we have a very simple set of instructions and templates available on our websites (here <http://laura-boudreau.com/policy-other-writings/>). We'd love to collaborate with a motivated CS phd student with interest in the design of secure information transmission systems for use, for example, in the aforementioned context as well as in whistleblowing and other similar systems. Ideally, this person would also have strong coding skills. Does anyone come to mind for either of you? If not, do you have any suggestions on faculty or departments whose students may be interested in this type of research? Let's try out calendar invites to this list, to see if we can be more organized. I just joined the HCI social and realized a big reason I miss it is because there isn't a calendar invite. E.g. it'd be great if we could have a calendar invite with the zoom link, and then whoever organizes it could just paste the agenda or any links into the body of the calendar invite. A few of us on the call discussed trying out calendar invites, and I convinced Blaine to give it a shot. Blaine for next week, can you try out sending an invite to hci(a)dgp.toronto.edu? I'm sure it will cause some chaos as some people use google, some outlook, and there are aliased sublists (e.g. my iai list, Khai's list, etc) But everyone, please just send polite & helpful info and screenshots of your user experience to Blaine and I. If we can figure out how to do calendaring, it'll be really helpful for lab organization. Any advice/suggestions/feedback welcome of course, with the understanding that I will be grateful for it, but not necessarily follow it (don't be too mad!), because of not understanding, not remembering, not having time, having other constraints, or a million other reasons! The latest IDEaS challenge brings a new element to light: *moral injury*. Healthcare workers and first responders are showing signs of having suffered extreme psychological, cognitive, and emotional responses, including guilt and shame as they make life and death decisions that on occasion go against their own moral beliefs and standards. This can leave them in a state of anxiety and distress on top of being overworked and overwhelmed.. The latest challenge from the IDEaS program looks for new ways to identify, diagnose and treat the moral injuries left by providing care during a worldwide pandemic. *Funding* Competitive Projects using Contributions is divided into two phases: Phase 1 that awards up to $200,000 for a period of 6 months, and Phase 2 that awards up to $1,000,000 for a period of 1 year. *This Call for Proposals is for Phase 1 only.* *Phase 1 – award up to $200,000* The objective of Phase 1 is to establish the S&T merit, innovativeness and impact of a solution that addresses a specific S&T Challenge. Applicants propose a solution within SRL 1-6 (inclusive). Proposals are evaluated and solutions that meet the evaluation criteria and all other requirements may be recommended for funding. If selected, applicants are eligible to receive up to $200,000 per agreement for the development of their proposed solution for a maximum performance period of six months. *Phase 2 – award up to $1,000,000* The objective of Phase 2 is to continue the S&T efforts of Phase 1 and progress promising solutions to a higher SRL. Applicants of successful Phase 1 solutions may receive an invitation from DND to further their solution’s SRL continuum and would be requested to submit a proposal (form to be supplied by DND at the appropriate time).
