The attached spreadsheet lists major awards for graduate students over the
coming year, along with application deadlines. Announcements will sent out
for each award in which the DCS graduate office is involved when we receive
the details from SGS. For awards that are administered directly by SGS,
see the webpages listed in the spreadsheet. DCS travel awards and DCS
internal awards will be announced shortly.
Note that for most awards handled directly by the DCS graduate office, the
deadline is 9:30 a.m., so that processing can begin the same day.

Dear Group,
I feel really devastated by the repeated incidents of loss of lives at
Bahen and in our Department. Do read the email forwarded below and please
feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions. Also, DO NOT do
anything that you don't like no matter what. There is no better achievement
than living a life that you enjoy.
Also, if you ever feel you need a hug, you know my arms are open. I will
never ask you why.

Dear Members of the DGP,
Many of you are now aware of the tragic incident that took place in the
Bahen building on Friday night. I want to add my voice to the rising chorus
that finds this event devastating.
More so, the increasing number of such occurrences is both heart-breaking
and frightening.
Like previous emails you have received on this subject, I want to reiterate
that if you feel the need to talk to anyone about this incident, or mental
health issues in general, please make use of the university resources
listed below. If you feel uncomfortable doing that, find someone you do
feel comfortable with to talk to — be it a family member, a friend or
colleague.
For many, university life can be a double-edged sword, both a source of
excitement and fullfilment, as well as a source of stress and potential
unhappiness. I am a firm believer that, as a community, we do better when
we navigate such things together.
In the spirit of that idea, I want to invite all members of the DGP
(students and faculty) to lunch, Monday, noon - 1pm, held in the DGP
seminar room. The intent is to provide some time for you to air any
concerns you may have, to offer/receive support or to just hang out and
reacquaint yourself with members of the lab. Though it is but a small
gesture, the least that can be done is to offer you the opportunity to be
heard and be surrounded by friendly faces.
Look after each other out there.
Sincerely,
David Levin

The idea of this hyper-local browser is interesting. I was wondering if
these could be used for some marginalized communities we are working with.

Dear all,
Some of us from the ICTD community have formed a startup to address
the issue of unavailability of local content in emerging markets.
GAIUS (www.gaiusnetworks.com) is a New York University spinout. Our
ambition is to create decentralised sustainable highly localised
lightweight mobile web ecosystems for the next 3 billion users. The
platform includes an innovative hyper-local browser that enables
hyper-local communities in emerging markets to create, interact and
monetise local content relevant to their communities in their own
languages. GAIUS also has key technological innovations that improve
mobile web performance and early trials demonstrate that mobile pages
created within the GAIUS ecosystem have a 60% reduction in bandwidth
consumption and download upto 90% faster compared to traditional
mobile webpages. GAIUS is part of Microsoft for Startups, invited
member of the Alliance for Affordable Internet and incubated by IDEA
London (Cisco, EDF and UCL).
We are currently doing early trials in India (with Microsoft Azure)
and in Kenya (with Liquid Telecom). We just completed the first phase
of trials across 1200+ users and are now on to our next phase. We
would like to invite users from INDIA and KENYA to trial our platform.
*Users from other countries can still trial out - you will be
redirected to our test platform.
We are also looking to start a few more trials across other emerging
countries especially the Pacific Islands, so if there is interest, we
are happy to look at it.
You can download the app from:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gaius.gaiusapp&hl=en_US
*iOS and KaiOS coming soon.
Thanks.
Regards
Arjuna

Dear All,
(please discard the previous email which got sent in the midway)
Yasaman and her team have become Champion the Hackathon for Education (
https://puebloscience.org/hackathon/) which took place today! They have
developed a prototype that are supposed to be deployed in Guyana for
science education!
Here is some text I copied from her email to me a while ago -
"The challenge of this hackathon was to build a robotics-based science
activity kit for high school students in Guyana that:
- Clearly teaches one or more science or engineering concept(s) listed
in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean
Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) syllabi.
- Can be taught, performed, and discussed by teachers and their students
within two or three 90-minute instructional periods.
- Uses only materials that can be purchased or easily ordered in Guyana
and in total cost less than $20 CAD per kit for re-useable kits or $5 CAD
per kit for non-reuseable kits.
- Is hands-on and interactive (and fun!).
- Satisfies the definition of “robotics activity”.
"
Congratulations, Yasaman! We are so proud of you!
Best Regards,
Ishtiaque
