First organized at the University of California Berkeley, USA, in 2006, the tenth ICTD is scheduled to be held at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, India, from January 4th to 7th, 2019. At the tenth ICTD, or ICTD X at IIM Ahmedabad, the conference’s focus is on growing our community to welcome researchers from related disciplines and practitioners, and supporting young researchers of ICTD as they pursue their research trajectories. Join us via any of the following tracks below: OPEN SESSIONS Open Sessions will welcome a variety of submissions and formats. Submissions can include proposals for events such as panels, workshops, design jams, and more, ideally fostering dialog and participation from researchers and practitioners. The DC is an excellent opportunity for young scholars to learn about the richly diverse ICTD community as they develop their dissertation research. Teaching opportunity at UTM (3h class, worth 10h)

Hi everyone, A colleague of mine at UTM seeks a TA to lead a tutorial introducing Tableau. Commitment is low (10h total, for a one-time 3h tutorial). It is rather urgent, so if you’re interested, please reach out to me at your earliest convenience. Details below: Required: TA to lead a 3 hour lab tutorial introducing Tableau Background: CCT218 (Information and Society) has students exploring the Ontario government's Open Data portal. For one of their assignments, students are tasked with downloading a data set and applying data visualization best practices. In preparation for the assignment, one class (Tuesday 11am to 2pm, specific date to be finalized) will be devoted to learning the basics of Tableau. A version of this software is available on the PC lab computers - what's missing is someone who knows this software well enough to lead a tutorial. Duties: You will prepare a workshop introducing Tableau and work with the students (n=40) to ensure they have a basic knowledge of the software tool. Hello folks, Dr. Foad Hamidi (http://www.foadhamidi.info/) from UMBC will be visiting on Friday next week, Aug 24th. He will be giving a talk at 11AM (title/abstract attached), and will be available for demos or just casual chat after 2PM. Send me an email by tomorrow EOD (Aug 23rd) if you would like to sign up for a slot. I got to know him since we were in the same session of CHI this year, and I was greatly inspired by his work on the social implications of automatic gender recognition systems, which was also awarded a Best Paper Award of this CHI. Cheers, Zhicong ******** Title: Incorporating Stakeholder Perspectives When Designing Digital Systems Abstract: Participatory and inclusive design approaches advocate for the inclusion of representative stakeholders early on in the design process both to ensure that outcomes are informed by the needs and desires of real-world users, and to avoid causing unintended harm. In this talk, I present several research projects that underline the importance of including diverse perspectives when creating digital systems. These projects include the participatory design and evaluation of a digital living media system that engages children through dynamics of caring and responsibility, the development of a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) open-source communication board for non-verbal users, and a study of perceptions and attitudes of transgender individuals towards automatic gender recognition technology. I conclude with reflections on how to incorporate participatory and inclusive approaches when designing digital systems. Biography: Foad Hamidi is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. His research interests include Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Participatory Design, Digital Living Media Systems and DIY Assistive Technology. He conducts interdisciplinary cormmunitity-engaged research and collaborates regularly with diverse community partners and stakeholders. He has a PhD in Computer Science from York University, Toronto.

He is also interested in using digital media to facilitate creative and learning processes in intercultural settings. He is currently working as a postdoctoral research associate at the Information Systems Department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is working with Dr. Amy Hurst in the prototyping and design lab (aka, "the pad"). He has a PhD in Computer Science from the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University in Toronto, Canada.
