---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Angela Demke Brown gradchair@cs.toronto.edu Date: Thu, Apr 18, 2019 at 2:29 PM Subject: University-wide graduate awards - deadline Tuesday April 23rd To: dcsall@cs.toronto.edu
Dear graduate students and faculty,
The deadline to apply for the SGS University-wide Awards ( http://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/currentstudents/Pages/University-Wide-Awards.aspx) is upon us. This deadline was previously announced as April 19th (in a Feb. 20th email to grad-students@cs) however that date falls on a statutory holiday. We will therefore accept application materials for these awards until 4pm on Tuesday, April 23rd. Please ensure that your complete application, including the required letter(s) of reference are submitted by email to gradoffice@cs.toronto.edu by this deadline.
For faculty:
- Many of the awards explicitly state the the letter of reference “must clearly state the referee's name and contact information” so please make sure to include this.
- Submit your letter as a pdf attached to an email with the subject “SGS University-wide Awards reference for <Student Full Name>”
For graduate students:
Please submit your application as 2 pdfs attached to one email with the subject “SGS University-wide Awards Application”:
(1) All application materials (application form, transcripts, cv, research statement, etc.) required for the award(s) to which you are applying, assembled into one document. Note that different awards have different requirements – refer to the SGS webpage for all the details; and
(2) the SGS Financial Needs form http://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/Documents/FINAL-Fin-Assess-OSOTF-w-Guide.pdf, if you are applying for an award that includes financial need as one of the criteria.
Only item (1) will be provided to the Graduate Affairs Committee for ranking, in the event of multiple applications for the same award.
Please read the instructions for the SGS Financial Needs form carefully and follow them. I have seen a number of common errors while reviewing these forms over the last several years, and it makes it very difficult to assess actual need on a level footing. In particular:
- You must fill out only Section 1 or Section 2 for living expenses, not both.
- Items with a check box in Section 3 require additional documentation.
- “Other” expenses in Section 3 also require documentation. Don’t include items like TTC passes or your home internet bill – these are included in the living expenses of Section 1 or Section 2.
- Use the 2018-19 Tuition and fees. For domestic students, this should be $8,489.52. International PhD students should also add the cost of UHIP.
- In Section 4, use the full amount of your guaranteed funding, including guaranteed TAships. You should have these numbers in your funding letters from the beginning of the year.
We are aware that actual living expenses in Toronto are higher than the monthly amounts on the Financial Needs assessment form. To provide a fair basis of comparison, however, you need to fill out the form as accurately as you can. A small positive balance in the “Total Available Resources” is not disqualifying, but a badly filled form might be. If you have any questions about how to fill the form, please ask – I am happy to help find the answers.
All the best,
Angela
