Hello all, We continue our bi-weekly reading group this Friday, June 15st, at 2PM. We will be reading two papers by Jakob Nielsen: Heuristic evaluation of user interfaces (CHI 1990) and Enhancing the explanatory power of usability heuristics (CHI 1994). These classic papers show how Nielsen studied best practices in heuristic evaluation, and used these results to develop his influential list of usability heuristics (https://www.nngroup.com/articles/ten-usability-heuristics/) which is now a standard tool in UX design and often applied in HCI research. (If you're worried, the second paper is quite short at 3.5 pages.) Hello folks, This upcoming Tuesday (June 12th, 12-1PM, lunch at 11:45AM) I am going to conduct a brainstorming session to help generate ideas for my projects on live streaming in non-entertainment contexts. I will briefly give a presentation about the projects I have been working on (which will be a summary of my CHI talk and a brief introduction of one follow-up work), and then lead a brainstorming session about designing live streaming tools for non-entertainment contexts. Since time is limited, we will start at 12 sharp. Thanks. ========================= Hello folks, This upcoming Tuesday (June 5, 12-1PM, lunch at 11:45AM) Eris, Fanny and I are going to conduct a structured brainstorming/focus group session to help generate ideas for our Borrow-from-image Vis styling project. We will provide two images, a dataset, and ask you to create data visualizations borrowing elements from these images. Given our limited timeframe, we will start at 12 sharp. In the interest of sprouting early ideas and making the exercise even more effective, below follow links to the images and the dataset we are going to use on Tuesday. HCI Reading Group "Yours is Better" 3PM Friday June 1 @ Crimson Teas

Hello all, We continue our bi-weekly reading group this Friday, June 1st, at 3PM. (Note: an hour later than our usual time) We will be reading "Yours is better!": participant response bias in HCI by Nicola Dell et. al, which was presented at CHI 2012. >From the paper abstract: "We find that respondents are about 2.5x more likely to prefer a technological artifact they believe to be developed by the interviewer, even when the alternative is identical. When the interviewer is a foreign researcher requiring a translator, the bias towards the interviewer's artifact increases to 5x."
