Applications will open on 21 October* for SGS conference travel grants, which are open to both PhD and MSc students, (deadline: 29 November*) for conference travel from 1 July 2019 to 1 June 2020. Details of both grants are given in the attached document. An application form for DCS travel grants is also attached. The next round of DCS travel grants will open in mid-January for travel in the first half of 2020. On mentoring

Folks, I wanted to share with you this old article on mentoring. As you will become a mentor in your professional life, be that in academia or outside, this may help you. As a new professor, I am also trying to learn the art of mentoring, and this also why I want you to read this. If you think I could work on some qualities here that would make me a better mentor for you, please let me know. https://www.nature.com/articles/447791a On a personal note, in my world, I live in the fantasy of being in a very egalitarian world and it is often a bit uncomfortable for me to see myself as a leader/mentor. I get a lot of fun thinking myself as a friend who can possibly help you, if you want. I also love working myself, and I am still learning the art of 'managing' by not actually working. I want to add my voice to the rising chorus that finds this event devastating. More so, the increasing number of such occurrences is both heart-breaking and frightening. Like previous emails you have received on this subject, I want to reiterate that if you feel the need to talk to anyone about this incident, or mental health issues in general, please make use of the university resources listed below. If you feel uncomfortable doing that, find someone you do feel comfortable with to talk to — be it a family member, a friend or colleague. For many, university life can be a double-edged sword, both a source of excitement and fullfilment, as well as a source of stress and potential unhappiness.
