*About Absolutely Interdisciplinary*
Understanding the capacities and limitations of complex new technologies
like AI calls for more than just a technical perspective. *Absolutely
Interdisciplinary* will convene researchers from across disciplines to
build new, interdisciplinary approaches to advance our understanding of how
to meet the challenge of ensuring AI and other powerful technologies
promote human well-being. This year, *Absolutely Interdisciplinary* takes
place virtually, with a one-day graduate workshop on *November
4**th**,* followed
by four scheduled sessions across two days on *November* *5**th** and **6*
*th**. **Visit the conference website for more information*

*About this year’s theme*
Humans are a fundamentally normative species, with complex cognitive and
social systems for shaping behaviour to implement collectively-determined
values and norms in support of cooperation. Building AI systems that are
robustly aligned with human values requires deep understandings of how
these normative systems work. At the same time, advances in AI present
unique opportunities to investigate and test what capacities contribute to
our ability to build, maintain, and abide by norms. This year, *Absolutely
Interdisciplinary* takes up the challenge of exploring these dynamics under
the theme *Human and Machine Normativity: New Connections.* *Learn more

*Subject:* Meet the Associate Fellows at the DCI 2021-2022
Dear colleagues,
I want to briefly share news from the Digital Curation Institute. The DCI
Fellowship has become a highly competitive Fellowship sought out by
researchers around the world. This year’s Fellowship call was met by 75
applications, out of which 7 excellent applications were shortlisted.
Because of this surge in interest, we have introduced a new additional
initiative, the Associate Fellowship at the DCI. Let me very briefly
introduce the *inaugural Associate Fellows* and their projects. I think
they will resonate with many of you:
*Dr. Victoria Palacin <https://www.mavipasi.com/>*, last year’s DCI Fellow
<https://dci.ischool.utoronto.ca/dci-fellowship-awarded-to-victoria-palacin/>,
will continue her research on pseudo-participation in and by design
<https://dspace.mit.edu/handle/1721.1/124702/> in relationships to how
ideologies manifest in digital technologies. I am very curious to see where
this research goes next.
*Vanessa Thomas <https://www.linkedin.com/in/vthomas1/>, PhD*, will build
on the TechOtherwise <https://techotherwise.pubpub.org/> platform’s Defund
Big Tech <https://techotherwise.pubpub.org/pub/dakcci1r/release/3> report
to explore through speculative design research how governments and
policymakers could take active steps in the directions outlined there. (By
the way, there’s a roundtable at 4S happening on that topic
<https://tinyurl.com/yhxpxwz6> next week!)
As *MELT <http://meltionary.com/MELT.html>*, arts-design researchers *Loren
Britton and Isabel Paehr* ask “What would data for trans* and disabled
lives be?” in a speculative design project involving a workshop in February
2022 that I look forward to very much!
Dr. *Doris Allhutter <https://www.oeaw.ac.at/ita/allhutter>* will further
explore the relation between epistemic values and situated agency,
especially in Requirements Engineering. (We’ve also organized the
second Critical
RE workshop <https://criticalrequirementsengineering.wordpress.com/> which
took place today.)
A more detailed post will be up on the DCI website later this week. We will
host various events throughout the year around these projects. I am hosting
a small informal online meeting *this Wednesday at 11am* – if you or any of
your students would like to join and meet the group, *please let me know*!
The “main” Fellowship meanwhile has faced the difficulty of Censure. The
DCI Fellowship selection committee decided to award the DCI Fellowship to
Prof. David Wachsmuth. Prof. Wachsmuth is Canada Research Chair in Urban
Governance at McGill University, where he is also an Associate Professor in
the School of Urban Planning and an Associate Member in the Department of
Geography. He directs UPGo, the Urban Politics and Governance research
group at McGill, where he leads a team of researchers investigating
pressing urban governance problems related to economic development,
environmental sustainability, and housing markets. He is the co-lead of the
Adapting Urban Environments for the Future theme of the McGill
Sustainability Systems Initiative <https://www.mcgill.ca/mssi/>, where he
is part of a broad interdisciplinary team developing new ways of
conceptualizing, measuring, and improving urban sustainability. Prof.
Wachsmuth’s groundbreaking work on the impact of digital platforms such as
Airbnb on global metropolitan housing markets, and the politics of data and
curation it involves, was previously featured in a DCI Lecture
<https://dci.ischool.utoronto.ca/prof-wachsmuth-data-and-the-lack-of-data-in…>
in
2019.
Like many other units <https://censureuoft.ca/statements-uoft-units/> at
UofT, the Digital Curation Institute supports Censure and has refrained
from hosting events or activities in violation of Censure. The Censure is
currently ‘paused’ but not lifted. Given these circumstances, Prof. David
Wachsmuth has expressed that he is “thrilled to have been offered” the
Fellowship but “unable to accept” until Censure is lifted. A joint statement
<https://dci.ischool.utoronto.ca/dci-and-fellow-elect-prof-david-wachsmuth-s…>
of David and myself is on the DCI website. (The Associate Fellows are in
less privileged positions and not members of CAUT.)

Christoph

The lecture is a book talk focusing on Cifor’s forthcoming *Viral Cultures:
Activist Archiving in the Age of AIDS *(University of Minnesota, 2022)*. *In
this talk, Cifor examines how by digitally remediating and transmitting
viral imagery, aesthetic practices, and political actions from AIDS
archives online through vital nostalgia practices contemporary artists Jess

Subject: [LIMITS] ICT4S Reading Group
To: LIMITS <limits(a)googlegroups.com>
Hello Everyone,
An outcome from the recent ICT4S summer school was a reading group to share
books to read and to keep the conversation going beyond yearly
conferences/meetings. I am forwarding this invitation to the LIMITS list to
invite interested folks to join us.
To keep it simple and informal we'll be communicating through email and a
shared doc (here: https://pad.riseup.net/p/jja9fZtjL1o_12dZwFpb) for
reading suggestions and comments. If we need a mailing list or something
more structured we can do that later. If you are interested in joining the
reading group, please add your name to the bottom of the doc. You will not
receive any further emails about this unless you sign up! If there is
anyone else who is interested in joining the reading group, please forward
and/or add them to the bottom of the shared doc (which we can pull from to
send any announcements). If you would like to opt-out/leave at any time
just remove your email from the doc.
So far we only have a couple of suggestions made by Christoph. I have added
a few I have/want to read as well. Please populate the list with any other
suggestions and/or comments, even if they are books you've read before and
think everyone should read. The plan is to read 1 book (or a few papers
2-4) per month and all meet once a month for 1-2 hours to discuss them. We
will meet via Zoom and I will send a google calendar invite once we have
the dates/attendees set. To attempt to accommodate the represented time
zones, the meetings will be at 3PM UTC, but the day will be decided via a
poll (here: https://www.when2meet.com/?12662659-gEPPo).
The first book we are reading is Jason Hickel's "Less is More: How Degrowth
Will Save the World" largely because that's what we already decided to
start reading during the summer school. For future readings we will
probably just have vote.
Lastly, if you have any comments or suggestions on the structuring or
anything else I've missed please let me know or chime in.
Thanks,
-Jay

Subject: Fw: U of T Student Engagement Awards 2021
To:

*From:* International <international(a)utoronto.ca>

*Subject:* U of T Student Engagement Awards 2021
Dear Students,
As applicants of the U of T COVID-19 Student Engagement Award in 2020, I am
pleased to share that this summer we will be offering another round of
funding for student-led projects. The U of T Student Engagement Awards
provide financial support to interested University of Toronto undergraduate
and graduate students working in collaboration with one another, including
in interdisciplinary teams. Projects that contribute to building and
fostering a global community, from across all disciplines, are invited.
In recognition of the challenges of the past year, this summer’s U of T
Student Engagement Awards will support student-led projects that contribute
to rebuilding healthy, resilient, and equitable communities as part of our
post-COVID recovery. Given the impact that the pandemic has had on mental
health as well as its disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations and
communities, submissions focused on these areas are encouraged but not
mandatory.
If you were unsuccessful last year but are returning to studies in Fall
2021 you are eligible to reapply. If you were successful last year, you are
eligible to reapply as well but please note this must be for a new project.
Funding will not be provided to support ongoing work related to last year’s
projects. Furthermore, depending on the volume of applications we may
prioritize proposals from students who did not receive funding last year.
We encourage you to share the award information with your friends,
classmates, and social networks. The award guidelines can be found here:
https://global.utoronto.ca/u-of-t-student-engagement-award/
Best wishes,
Julia
