Hi Ishtiaque,
We would like to invite you and your students to join a Slack instance
aimed at connecting all HCI researchers across Canada. We hope that this
will be a way to bring people together and share their knowledge, find new
collaborations, discover new opportunities and develop a diverse community
of students, professors and industrial researchers.
If you would like to join and help build the community, please use the link
below. Please share it with your students and any other individuals
interested in HCI research in Canada.

Hi Everyone,
As I mentioned last week I've set up this week's social meeting with some
grad students from Waterloo. I thought this would be a great chance to meet
other people in HCI and have a more social time. Please come, we'll have
some competitive DGP vs. Waterloo games planned and also a chance to get to
know one another one-on-one.

Subject: Surveillance Pandemic, a conversation with Naomi Klein and Edward
Snowden hosted by Mijente
To: Social Responsibility of Computing <
social-responsibility-of-computing(a)googlegroups.com>
In the spirit of the workshop discussion, and in particular the "De-fund
big (giant?) tech / Re-fund community" theme, this panel next Tuesday, June
23, at 3 p.m. Pacific / 6 p.m. Eastern looks interesting. It features
Jacinta Gonzales*,* of the Latinx justice advocacy group Mijente in
conversation with Naomi Klein and Edward Snowden.
We are mobilizing during a powerful moment in movement history. A pandemic
is raging while Black and brown communities disproportionately bear the
worst of its health and economic impacts. Black Lives Matter protests have
taken place globally, demanding justice for the victims of police violence
and calling for police to be defunded. In the background, the
surveillance state is capitalizing on these crises to expand its powers.
Tech companies have received millions to track and analyze outbreaks — with
few if any privacy protections. Customs and Border Protection has flown
surveillance drones to monitor Minneapolis protesters marching against the
police killing of George Floyd. These technologies and so many more have
been especially developed by tech companies for law enforcement use. Our
communities have felt the devastating impacts of these technologies and we
have questions. Join us on *Tuesday, June 23rd at 6PM EST/3PM PST* for our
event, Surveillance Pandemic, a conversation with Naomi Klein and Edward
Snowden hosted by Mijente. Spanish translation will be available for this
event. It’s time to center communities most impacted by the surveillance
state and discuss tech company and government partnerships as well as the
different technologies being used right now in the United States — against
Black Lives Matters protesters, undocumented immigrants, and all of us.
These technologies threaten not just our civil liberties, but our
lives. Register
for the event here.

In solidarity,
civiles, sino nuestras vidas. Regístrese para el evento aquí.

Hi Everyone!
Continuing the trend of looking at writing we'll be doing an interactive
workshop on related work next Tuesday. We'll go over a few different styles
of related work, the purpose of writing related work, and some of the newer
trends like a combined background + related work section.
This is a huge topic, and I'm not necessarily an expert at any of this so I
was hoping this workshop would be a bit more interactive and we could learn
from one another. To help it be interactive I'd like everybody to try to
bring:
- *TODO: *A short writeup of their current related work process in this
document (shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes):
-
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1el-wyns-yuj7dejBc-iSoevBm6LRumzBNJ8lRi1…
- The idea is to analyse your own process so we can start to think of
places we might need help.

Thank you! See you all next week,
Blaine
I will join at 12:30 since I have another meeting until then.

Hi Everyone,
Tomorrow we will be having a *social* HCI meeting at the usual time
(12:30). The format will be a lot like last week because I think that went
great:
- 5 minute chats 2-3 people per breakout room
- Trivia!!
- Small groups chat until people leave, 3-5 people per breakout room
So come hang out! The schedule makes it sound formal and regimented but
it's really not.

PS: Sorry if you see this email twice, I used the wrong from address
originally.
Hope to see you there,
Blaine
