DGP Lab, Department of Computer Science at U of T @ 40 St. George Street Room 5166* Lunch reception begins at 12:30 pm. Presentation begins at 1:00 pm. *Designing Intelligent Objects * Intelligent objects are all around us — responsive buildings, connected toys, smart speakers. Designing these objects remains difficult, with significant effort required from domain experts in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to get initial prototypes up and running. This often leaves little time to consider the user experience, which suffers as a result of this overhead. This talk covers several approaches which aim to reduce the investment needed to design, create and test smart objects and spaces. These approaches simplify tasks of programming, 3D modelling and fabrication to decrease the time and effort between ideation and testing. The work spans broad range of domains – including the design of system behaviours, programming building controls, and creating circuits. This research builds on a wide range of enabling technology, from virtual reality to generative design and covers a wide range of application areas. As the research moves towards the architectural-scale, this presentation will cover a large-scale living research lab which is being developed at Autodesk in Toronto to explore the future of smart construction. *Bio* Fraser Anderson is a Principal Research Scientist within the User Interface group at Autodesk Research. At Autodesk, he examines how new technology can support designers in developing, prototyping and building smart objects and structures. This research encompasses new interaction techniques, fabrication systems, and applying generative design technology to circuitry. He is an active member of the academic Human Computer Interaction community, serving on the program committee of ACM’s CHI, UIST and MobileHCI conferences, as well as actively publishing in these venues. Leveraging context and machine learning for the design of predictive and self-adaptive user experiences By leveraging machine learning techniques, digital channels are becoming more predictive and contextual. Through this evolution, user experience design is becoming more than just a two-dimensional user interface consideration. In this talk, Hossein will be talking about how data science and the synthesis of context from data, enable the design of a more adaptive and engaging user experience. He will demonstrate how his team is building tools enabling AI and Machine Learning to be used by non-computer and data scientists and how such capabilities creates a new ecology of services and users. The talk includes real examples and demos of how Fortune 500s are making their user experiences learnable. At the end, Hossein will be talking about his Augmented Eternity project at MIT Media Lab which is focused on enabling users to share expertise using AI. Bio Professor Hossein Rahnama is a recognized figure in ubiquitous and pervasive computing. His research explores artificial intelligence, mobile human-computer interaction, and the effective design of contextual services. In 2017, Hossein was recognized as one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40. In 2012, he was recognized by the MIT Technology Review as one of the world's top innovators under the age of 35 for his research in context-aware computing. The Smithsonian named Hossein as one of the top six innovators to watch in 2013. Hossein has 35 publications and 18 patents in ubiquitous computing, is serving on the board of Canadian Science Publishing, and was a Council Member of the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). Hossein is also a visiting professor at the Human Dynamics group at MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, MA. Hello everyone, We are having our HCI meeting tomorrow on Tuesday, Feb 19th. In this week, Mingming will first practice his job talk on Think-aloud Verbalizations and Usability Problems. Then, Jacob will present an introduction to his research project on the design of interactive data comics that communicate narratives relevant to climate change and income inequality. Attendees will participate in a brainstorming exercise to investigate how two existing data comics might be augmented with interactive elements. Please join and participate in the meeting.
