City Internships is a member of the National Association of Colleges &
Employers (NACE), NAFSA: Association of International Educators, The Forum
on Education Abroad and the National Society on Experiential Education
(NSEE).
*About City Internships*
City Internships creates globally engaged, career-ready graduates.
Since 2011, our immersive, structured "bridge" programs have equipped
graduates with the in-demand skills, experience and links to employers
necessary to launch meaningful careers in today's competitive and evolving
employment landscape.
We are a "career accelerator" with a strong track-record in protecting and
amplifying the value of students' post-secondary education. Upon college
graduation, CI alumni secure graduate-level employment 3 times more quickly
and starting salaries 30 percent higher than their peers.
Our overarching mission is to serve as a bridge between traditional
education providers and leading companies.
In the US, fewer than 60 percent of college students graduate. And fewer
than 55% of recent graduates (those aged between 22 and 27) secure
graduate-level employment. The effects of early career outcomes are
significant and long-lasting, more than three-quarters of lifetime earnings
growth accrues within the first decade of work. As well as individuals, the
effects of poor early career outcomes have the potential destabilize
institutions. We believe the talent/skill and enrollee shortages reported,
increasingly and respectively, by employers and educators are symptomatic
of the same cause; employers and educators occupying parallel, seldom
overlapping universes and the depressed college outcomes that result.
By rigorously enhancing the career preparedness of students via
outcomes-focused experiential education, we too serve the dual and mutual
interests of employers and traditional educators; enabling companies to
build suitably skilled and high-performing teams and colleges to
demonstrate quality, relevance and value through favorable
education-to-employment outcomes.
*City Internships Programs*
3 program formats. 9 career fields. 20 cities.
For 2020, CI offers programs in three formats.
Our *Global Accelerator Program* (GAP) is our flagship experience. It is an
8-week summer-only program delivered in London and New York. All students
attend an 8-week placement with a leading employer in their chosen career
field. And students may participate in the GAP program on a resident or
non-resident ("commuter") attendee.
All GAP students undertake a cohort-based "Career Navigator" and "Business
Leaders" course of seminars and workshops developed, respectively, to
maximize students' career-readiness and commercial awareness. Our
on-the-ground coaches and mentors use productive struggle to challenge and
support students in equal measure, facilitating the self-discovery of
career preferences, strengths and potential.
Our *Global Explorer Program* (GEP) offers a more customizable experience.
Students may undertake a 6 to 12 week program (with corresponding-length
internship placement in their chosen career field), in one of 20 cities,
and at at any time of year (programs commence on a rolling monthly
basis). All GEP students undertake an personalized, online version of our
prized Career Navigator and Business leaders courses. All GEP students also
enjoy regular access to career coaches and ongoing guidance.
Our *Remote Program* (RP) is new for 2020 and offers an experience yielding
the benefits of a structured and well-managed remote internship placement,
without the logistical and financial overhead associated with relocating
elsewhere. Like the GEP, students may undertake a 6 to 12 week program
(with corresponding-length internship placement in their chosen career
field), in one of 20 cities, and at at any time of year (programs commence
on a rolling monthly basis). All RP students undertake an personalized,
online version of our prized Career Navigator and Business leaders courses.
All RP also students enjoy regular access to career coaches and ongoing
guidance.
All programs are open to undergraduate *and* graduate students from *any
year* and *any major*.
Students may apply directly. Alternatively, students attending partnering
colleges may apply via designated portals available through their Career
and/or Study Abroad Centers.
Program locations:
*> London*, Dublin, *Paris*, Madrid, *Barcelona*, Shanghai, *Tokyo*,
Bangkok, *Hong Kong*, Melbourne, *Toronto*, New York, *Los Angeles*,
Paris, *Washington
D.C.*, Boston, *Chicago*, Miami, *San Francisco, * *Medellin*, and Santiago.
Internship placement career fields:
*> Banking & financial services*, Consulting & Professional services,
*Marketing,
Advertising & PR*, Law & Politics, *Media, Entertainment & Journalism*,
Art, Fashion & Design, *Start-ups & Entrepreneurship*, Technology &
Engineering, and *Charities, Non-profits & NGOs*.

get in touch with questions.
*Educator partnerships*
Most students find us on their own. Our academic partnership initiative
invites educators, at a departmental, school or college-wide level, to
become part of the conversation and decision-making process when their
students engage with City Internships.
Academic partners receive access to student application and outcome
reporting, a dedicated point of contact with CI’s Student Experience team
to assist with student inquiries and guaranteed admissions acceptance for
their students.
> Schedule a call
<https://sendmail2.city-internships.com/l/Ei6QdOMzukvgPcgxu3YGow/lqCne9cTB8q…>with
our Student Experience team.
Please note, we will be accepting new academic partner requests for the
2019/20 Academic Year until 1st December 2019.
*Educator distribution list management*
Our communications to educators provide advanced notice about our programs
for students and recent graduates, including application deadlines and
scholarship opportunities. We typically send no more than eight
communications to our academic faculty and support staff contacts each year.
If you would like to add or modify your contact details or add a colleague
to our educator mailing list, please use or share our Educator Mailing Form

Folks,
I am trying a few communication channels for our team to reduce some load
off email. You may receive a few invitations from Slack, Microsoft Teams,
etc., but please ignore them until I send a specific message.
Also, as I am exploring these options, please feel free to share your
suggestions. I am not a big user of communication channels as I hate
disruptions, but sending emails over pretty stuff is also not an ideal
solution. I like Slack's chatting and searching services (we already have
one that I use on and off), but Slack is costly if you want a full version
of it (and I don't want our group to be a part of the giant DGP Slack which
is very distracting). Microsoft Teams seems like e a good option to me for
now, but I am exploring and open to suggestions.
The idea is that we will still use emails, especially for attachment and
announcements. But we will mostly use the second communication channel for
1-1 conversations and if we want to share news, article, etc. A place like
Slack or Teams is also good for keeping a list of reading group activities,
scheduling, voting, etc.
What do you think?

Subject line:
Community/Seminar for Learning Grad "MetaSkills", such as coming up with
research questions, finding jobs, project management, collaboration,
managing stress:
Hi Everyone!
I am chairing the Grad MetaSkills Community, which is a novel take on
previous years' Grad Skills Seminar. The kickoff meeting is Tue 1215-1:30
in BA 5256.
1.Goal & Examples of Grad MetaSkills.
The goal is to speed up your learning and practicing of the MetaSkills that
are only implicitly acquired (or not acquired at all) from your typical
course and research/internship activities.
Examples of questions this community can help you improve your answers to:
> How do I come up with better research ideas?
> How do I maximize chances of getting an academic/industry job I want?
> How do I collaborate more effectively?
> How do I manage & get help in managing stress & improving well-being?
2. Current Plan & How you can improve on it. Discussion Forum & Online
Resources in Wiki/Google Drive
I'm very open as to what form this takes, and anyone with ideas and energy
should step in and start making them happen.
As a prototype – something concrete to make *something* happen and provide
something people can complain about and try to improve :D – here is the
current plan. The community will start with:
> A Google drive of resources. tiny.cc/gmsfolder Grad MetaSkills
Folder-editable
<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1CxlcuYrx7zfklKqsJVxm7mLBACkXOCIs>
> A discussion forum that acts as opt-in mailing list, and in person seminar
meetings. (need someone to set up a Google Group Q & A forum and get people
added)
But now's your time to make suggestions or requests or say what you think
should happen (and better yet, take some actions to make it happen!).
Feel free to reach out with questions or unsolicited advice, either in the
Gdoc or emailing gradmetaskillschair(a)googlegroups.com.
3. Action item: Add requests for topics, links to resources, ideas to Gdoc
at URL tiny.cc/gmsinput
Can you set a time to go to this Google doc and add some information?
tiny.cc/gmsinput Resources, Advice, Questions for Grad MetaSkills Community
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jKOiIGsqeQDFFpdK_ryB7PlO_KtpGNWbxIzwdv0…>
It could be: (a) any requests (topics or questions you want discussed), (b)
links to resources (e.g. Blog posts, tweets, papers with good advice), or
(c) ideas for what this community should do.
We will crowdsource this, and iteratively try things out.
4. Kickoff meeting Tue 26 Nov, 12:15-1:30 in BA 5256. Want to volunteer to
help?
We also need some volunteers to help with different parts of the community,
like setting up discussion forum, organizing online resources, recording
talks. it could be anywhere from 2-10 hours a month (negotiable with you).
We might be able to look into you being paid for this time.
The kickoff meeting is Tue 1215-1:30 in BA 5256. (we can pay for lunch if
someone volunteers to organize it).
Look forward to talking more!

Maintenance & Care in Havana's StreetNet
To: <limits(a)googlegroups.com>
I haven't read this yet but it seems to look at many LIMITS issues.
If it Rains, Ask Grandma to Disconnect the Nano: Maintenance & Care in
Havana's StreetNet
https://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=3359289
"In Cuba, where internet access is severely constrained, technology
enthusiasts have built StreetNet (SNET), a community network (CN) that has
grown organically, reaching tens of thousands of households across Havana.
Through fieldwork conducted in 2016 and 2017, we investigate participants'
strategies as they engage with a network where the material
elements---cables, switches, nanos, and servers---are regularly breaking
down. Drawing on maintenance and care (M&C) scholarship, we present an
in-depth investigation of the management and anticipation of breakdowns in
SNET, foregrounding the deeply relational nature of repair work, collective
efforts required for SNET's M&C, and the values and motivations
underpinning these practices. Our paper contributes a unique perspective on
how CNs are run locally and organically, outlining considerations for how
interventions along these lines might be more suitably designed. We also
complicate perspectives of innovation through a discussion of cultural
ideologies and tensions underpinning M&C practices."

§ a doctoral program that you are entering without having ever been
enrolled in a master’s program (that is, direct-entry); or
§ a combined master’s-doctoral program; or
§ a master’s program that will transition to an eligible doctoral program,
either before or after award activation, with no master’s degree conferred

- have achieved a first-class average (3.5 GPA or A- average at U of T),
in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent); and
- submit a maximum of one scholarship application per academic year to
either CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC (Research Portal will allow the application to
be submitted to up to *three*institutions). Students are not permitted
to apply for a CGS M and a Tri-Agency doctoral award in the same academic
year.
*For full eligibility criteria, visit the **Tri-agency Canada Graduate
Scholarships-Master’s Program website*

level as a requirement for completion of the program. Master’s programs
that are based only on course work are typically not eligible since they do
not include a significant research component.
Application Process
Applicants must complete and submit an online application using the Research
Portal <https://portal-portail.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/>. Students should refer
to the CGS M application instructions
