Facebook blood donation mission

This is a new service of Facebook for "helping people" through blood donation: https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/28/health/facebook-health-preventive-tool-welln… ? Besides the obvious question of privacy, I wonder if this may also create other problems. For example, if giving blood becomes more of a matter of social status than of a need-based response, people may stop donating blood when there is no associated social media. Also, if this gets mainstream, I wonder if people will be forced to use Facebook if they need blood. I am thinking ... Hey Everyone, A friend over at OCAD is conducting a study to understand makers' documentation processes for DIY projects. He's looking for experienced makers to partake. Below are the details along with attachments if you are interested in participating. Thanks! Karthik ---------------------- I am looking for participants for a study related to understanding people’s documentation processes for DIY projects, running over the next two weeks (21 October - 8 November). I was wondering if you could forward information about my study (attached) to people that you think might be interested in participating? Participants should be at least 18 years old and have 1+ years of experience with any digital fabrication tools (3D Printers, Laser cutters, CNC, etc.). The study will be about 40 to 60 minutes in length and participants can either attend in-person at an OCAD U campus location (205 Richmond) or participate remotely via Skype or Hangouts if they aren’t located in Toronto. In attachment, you can find the flyer for the study and a participant information sheet with more details on the study. Autodesk-Research @ 661 University Avenue #200, Toronto, ON. Lunch reception begins at 12:30 pm. Presentation begins at 1:00 pm. Abstract Sidewalk Labs aims to improve the quality of human life in cities through technological innovation. One focus of our work is the improvement of existing urban design processes through interactive visualization, optimization, and cloud computation. In this talk, we will share a case study describing our ongoing experiences in applying computation to the design of the built environment; contextualize this work within a broader history of urbanism and technology; outline the ongoing partnership between domain experts, designers and engineers at Sidewalk Labs; and describe the challenges of making a useful and usable tool for district-scale planning and development. Bios Siqi Zhu Siqi is Associate Director, Public Realm at Sidewalk Labs, where his work imagines how technology transforms the design and implementation of urban streets and public realm. Before Sidewalk, Siqi headed up product design at Envelope, a NYC-based startup that visualizes development opportunities under NYC zoning. He also worked as a senior designer and project manager at Boston-based Sasaki and Utile, where he oversaw urban planning projects for a variety of public, private, and institutional clients across the US and internationally. Siqi is passionate about great urban public spaces. He is particularly interested in how a human-centered, research- and data-intensive design process can yield fresh insights about—and build stakeholder consensus around—how we improve the urban public realm. He played a key role in creating Boston’s first Complete Streets guidelines, an award-winning design manual noted for technical and visual communication excellence; and Boston’s 2030 city-wide mobility strategy, lauded for its use of data visualization to engage a city-wide constituency in complex mobility planning decisions. Siqi has also worked extensively with municipal transportation and parks departments, the National Park Service, and other public space managers around the country. Siqi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto and a Masters in Urban Planning from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has led research projects at MIT Senseable City Lab and currently teaches at Northeastern University’s College of Art, Media, and Design. We encourage submissions across a broad spectrum of topics in this space, including but not limited to: Climate change modeling - Environmental scientific studies - Impact of climate change on populations - Sustainable management of natural resources - Environmental policy studies - Environmental economics - Measuring and evaluating the impact of nature-based strategies *Deployment Experiences and Practitioner Reports* *Track chairs: Ayorkor Korsah, Ashesi University and Mercy Julia Borbor Cordova, ESPOL* This track takes long papers on deployment experiences and short papers on practitioner reports, related to any of the above tracks. Topics of interest include, but are limited to: - Evaluations of impact from technologies deployed in the field - Financial sustainability - Failures - Reflections from long-term deployments - Problem statements that can lead to new research directions ACM COMPASS 2020 specifically aims to forge stronger relationships between practitioners and researchers. ------------------------------ Submission instructions Full papers will be archival submissions with a length of up to 10 pages, plus references. Papers should represent polished, significant contributions. Authors are encouraged to submit a paper of length proportional to its contribution. In addition, COMPASS 2020 will have a Posters track for preliminary projects or late-breaking results. Posters will not be archival and are intended to allow presenters to share their latest results or get early feedback on projects. Poster submissions will be limited to 2 pages plus references. There are two poster submission deadlines (March 2nd and Apr 20th) to allow for earlier travel planning as well as late-breaking work.
