Hi everyone, Charles Perin will give a talk this coming Thursday 14 December, at 2PM in BA5187. Details below: Small, Manipulable, and Slow data visualization Visualization is not just a way of creating pretty pictures for business purposes and marketing. In this talk I will discuss the power of interactive visualizations for exploring and making sense of data. I will focus on the importance of sense of control, engagement and understanding that provides (slow) data manipulation. Bio: I am a Lecturer (eq. Assistant Professor) in the giCentre, Department of Computer Science at City, University of London. I conduct research at the intersection of information visualization and human computer interaction. I am particularly interested in designing and studying new interactions for visualizations and in understanding how people may make use of and interact with visualizations in their everyday lives. Before joining City, I was a Post-doc at University of Calgary. I obtained my PhD on Direct Manipulation for Information Visualization, at Université Paris Sud-XI in 2014. — Fanny

[Final Reminder] Dec. 12th HCI meeting & Invited Talk

Hello DGP-hci people, This is a final reminder for our HCI meeting. We have two events tomorrow starting at 12:30pm @ DPG Seminar room (BA 5187). 1. HCI Meeting - We will have 5mins presentations from each of our meeting attendees. These are informal presentations, yet these are great opportunities for everyone to share and look back their research work in 2017. Feel free to share any materials and knowledge you’ve got this year. There is no restriction on a format and send me your files to me by EOD Monday, so I can streamline them. Lunch will be served. 2. Invited Talk - Nathalie Henry Riche will give a talk about Data-Driven Storytelling: Transforming Data into Visually Shared Stories. The talk will begin right after the HCI meeting. While most of the research in information visualization has been focusing on designing and implementing novel interfaces and interactive techniques to enable data exploration, data visualizations also started to appear as a powerful vector for communicating information to a large audience. Stories supported by facts extracted from data analysis (e.g. data-driven storytelling) proliferate in many different forms from static infographics to dynamic and interactive applications on news media outlets. Yet, there is little research on what makes compelling visual stories or on how to empower people to build these experiences without programming. I will present insights from projects focusing on two different genres of data-driven stories: animations and comics. I will conclude the talk by reflecting on challenges and opportunities in this new research field. > > Bio: Nathalie is a researcher at Microsoft Research since 2008. She is a team member of the EPIC (Extended Perception, Interaction, &Cognition) research group led by Ken Hinckley. Nathalie holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Paris Sud, France; and University of Sydney, Australia. She published her research in leading venues in Human-Computer Interaction and Information Visualization.
