September Announcements Archive

Thursday, September 28

Slides 198-227 (PostScript | PDF) and 228-277 (PostScript | PDF) have been posted.

The assignment 2 specification has been posted.

Wednesday, September 27

Practical 2 notes have been posted.

Wednesday, September 20

PostScript and PDF versions of slides 58-146 have been posted.

TAs will only be available from 5 to 6 p.m. for practicals. The TAs will keep this same schedule for the rest of the semester. So, if you have questions, you'll have to wait until 5 to ask a TA.

Please do not ask me or the TAs to change this arrangement, because we can't. Because of the TAs' schedules, none of them can make 4-5 p.m. (Last week, they were able to attend because the labs at that time for the courses they were taking were cancelled. Remember: They're students too!)

Monday, September 18

Tutorial notes for week 2 have been posted.

Thursday, September 14

Assignment 1 announcements have been updated.

My policy for electronic correspondence (i.e. e-mail and newsgroup use as it pertains to this course) has been posted. It is required reading; please read it before you send your next e-mail to me or the course newsgroup.

The following links have been posted to help you with questions about ECF-related items, such as your e-mail account and how to use UNIX:

If you want to work on your assignments at home, you will need a C/C++ compiler, a text editor and an FTP client (to FTP your files back and forth to your account on ecf.toronto.edu), at the very least. Here are links to (free) examples of these for Windows users:

  • Cygwin - RedHat's port of GNU's development tools (including gcc and g++, the GNU C and C++ compilers) for Windows 95/98/NT
  • Emacs - A powerful text editor for Windows NT (also works on Windows 95/98)
  • WS_FTP LE - Educational use version of WS_FTP, an FTP client for Windows

There are many other good compilers, text editors and FTP clients out there on the Internet, so don't hesitate to look around. If you have a link you would like to share, please e-mail the instructor.

Neither the instructor nor the TAs will provide technical support for this software. There are many good resources (especially on the Internet) that can help you better than we could. Use them.

Wednesday, September 13

I tried converting the PostScript version of the slides to PDF on a different server, and it worked. So, the PDF for slides 1-57 is now available.

Tuesday, September 12

It appears that the tutorial has been moved to M12 (in GB405 and HA403) and that the practical has been moved to W4-6 (in SF1106 and SF1012). So, as announced in class, there will be a practical tomorrow. To prepare for practical, you can print out and read this handout. TAs will be on hand to help you with any questions you may have.

Regarding ECF accounts, apparently they are automatically set up for you, so you should be able to follow the instructions in the handout and log in to ECF successfully. If you experience any problems with your account, visit GB154.

The following items have been posted/updated:

Friday, September 8

Unfortunately, I still have not received any updates on the tutorial/practical situation. As announced in class, tutorials for next week are cancelled. If the practical is scheduled for Monday, then it will also be cancelled; however, if the practical is scheduled for Wednesday, it will be held.

I will post the first set of slides and a course information sheet as soon as the tutorial/practical situation is resolved. Hopefully this will be sooner rather than later.
