Objectives

The objectives of Science for Peace are charitable: research and education for peace in the broadest sense. This implies: to sustain life, and to prevent the horrors of armed conflict, especially with weapons of mass destruction, and ultimately to abolish the institution of war. A concern for peace inevitably brings one into contact with the deeper realities. Peace means much more than the absence of war. It cannot exist without justice, nor can it be sustained in a deteriorating environment. Today's objectives and concerns have expanded from those of the Cold War days; but the question remains that of survival.

Science for Peace is incorporated as a charitable organization, and has a Board with about 40 members.

SfP schedules Public Lectures and Panel Discussions, publishes books, organizes Roundtable Discussions through its Working Groups, publishes articles in the Science for Peace Section of Peace Magazine (published bimonthly), hold Conferences (about yearly), etc.

SfP communicates with its members by e-mail, with notices and items of interest being sent to those on the Toronto area (the s4ptor list) about 3 or 4 times per week, to Ontario members (s4pont) 1 or 2 and about 1 per week to others (s4pcan). The Bulletin has been mailed to all members quarterly, but more frequent mailing to non-e-mail members of a Newsletter based on the e-mail notices is being considered. SfP also has a World Wide Web Home Page, and operates a discussion network with a compuserver for those members wishing to subscribe.
