RONALD M. BAECKER


Ronald M. Baecker is Bell University Laboratories Chair in Human-Computer Interaction and Professor of Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Management at the University of Toronto, Chief Scientist, Knowledge Media Design Institute and co-Director of the Dynamic Graphics Project. He has been a Summer Staff Member at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, a Senior Visiting Scholar in the Human Interface Group of Apple Computer, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland, the University of British Columbia, and the M.I.T. Media Laboratory. He also was founder, president, and Chairman of the Board of HCR Corporation, Canada's leading UNIX systems software firm, sold in 1990 to The Santa Cruz Operation.

The author of roughly one hundred technical papers, films, and video tapes, he is an active researcher and lecturer on topics including human-computer interaction, user interface design, software visualization, computer-supported cooperative work, interactive computer graphics, computer-based multi-media, and entrepreneurship in the software industry. He is co-author/editor, along with William Buxton, of the book Readings in Human-Computer Interaction: A Multidisciplinary Approach, and co-author, along with Aaron Marcus, of the book Human Factors and Typography for More Readable Programs, author/editor of the book Readings in Groupware and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work: Facilitating Human-Human Collaboration, and co-author/editor along with William Buxton, Jonathan Grudin, and Saul Greenberg, of the book. Readings in Human-Computer Interaction: Toward the Year 2000. He received a B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. from M.I.T.

Professor Baecker developed, and currently teaches, The Business of Software (CSC 454/2527). Students wishing to enroll in this course must complete a ballot form and return it to the student counselor in SF 2304D (along with supporting documentation) by the date posted by the undergraduate secretary. Enrolment is limited. Late ballots will not be considered.
