Hi all,
We are going to have a session at DGP Seminar room to go through the video previews (40 minutes) of UIST papers at 3 pm on Friday. Please feel free to join us!
Best, Bryan
Hi team,
I already advised several you guys to watch these (and the video previews of other conferences such as CHI and VIS that are also available on Youtube and Vimeo respectively; and likely others such as SIGGRAPH, possibly Ubicomp, etc...). To those I haven’t told yet, here we go: you should watch video previews when you’re tempted to procrastinate, or in the background as you cook or clean your house. Video previews are 30s long in general, and are a great tool to get a gist at the technical program of the conferences. Older editions are not obsolete. Video previews from the past 5+ years (where available) are definitely still relevant for your own personal knowledge of the field’s recent (and older) history.
What Bryan is posting though, is an even better opportunity and context to watch these. Go and share your thoughts and bound with the larger HCI group. I vividly encourage you guys to watch the videos with other members of the lab on Friday. It’s a nice way of getting at least a partial experience of the conference happening now and getting to know other members of the lab.
I take the opportunity to bring up the HCI reading group. I unfortunately couldn’t come to the HCI meeting today, so I missed most of the discussion, but regularly discuss with Jacob about this — who is currently facilitating the reading meetings. If you haven’t engaged with the reading group yet, I stress that it’s another great opportunity for you to read and learn about relevant topics that you may not have come across otherwise (or may, but didn’t get the chance to discuss with anyone). Again, another great way to engage in rich discussions and bound with our awesome HCI crowd!
Don’t be shy. The more you partake in these social activities, the more you’ll learn about research, about your colleagues, and the more you’ll feel part of the lab dgp is. I’m not seeing you guys wandering around the lab much just yet, and hope to see increased interactions within and beyond our research group in the near future (our close Computer Graphics and Computer Vision lambastes are fantastic people too!). I can’t stress enough the great opportunity you have to evolve in such vibrant and resourceful environment.
My unsolicited advice, is make the most of it. Make the lab the place you want to be in, the place you get a lot from, research and social-wise, and more broadly be open and seize opportunities that the University has to offer (there are countless talks and events you can attend that may be inspiring, or even eye-opening to you). Please, don’t let irrelevant reasons make you miss such great opportunities. Several of you, if not all may already do so, so it’s great. If you haven’t, please seriously consider engaging more with such activities.
See you tomorrow! - fanny
