Hi Everyone!
Next Tuesday we'll be doing an abstract workshop! Everybody should come
with an abstract. It can be something you wrote for a past paper, past
course project, a new project, it doesn't really matter. If you do write a
new one, don't spend too long on it, probably not more than an hour. The
point of this is to get early feedback and to learn how to write abstracts
from each other.
Personally I'll be writing an abstract for CHI2021, because I'd love to
hear what other people think.
Excited to see you all next week and learn everybody's secret's to writing
abstracts!
Zoom link: https://utoronto.zoom.us/j/96404556988
PS: If anybody thinks they're particularly good at writing abstracts and
wants to give a workshop, or has some resources, let me know and I can fit
it in!
Best,
Blaine
Hey Everyone,
This week (tomorrow) we will be doing some social activities! The plan is
as follows:
- Chat! We'll start by chatting in a bigger group.
- Then we'll break into smaller groups and chat with people we maybe
haven't in a while.
- Games! We'll play a selection of games together. This includes video
games like https://skribbl.io/ but also some not video games.
Hope to see everybody there, and if you think there's anything else we
should do, shoot me a message.
Best,
Blaine
Anyone interested in some paid time this summer putting CSC 428 into online
version?
This is the 4th year undergrad HCI course that Tovi taught last year (cross
listed grad course as well). I'm teaching it in spring so right now I am
moving parts of it into online education resources.
I have to make recommendations to the dept by Tue and then they decide, so
let me know if you might be interested. For example in a 50 hour contract,
pay is around $30/hour. This is as a casual (there is a TA position
available too, but not sure if you're still eligible if you didn't apply).

Hi Everyone!
After our last meeting on Tuesday I've taken on the role of "HCI meeting
organiser person".
Going forward we've decided to try to make more room for socialising. We're
going to do that using an alternating schedule of *research development*
and *casual meetings*. The meeting time is currently every Tuesday at
12:30.
Research development meetings are fairly formal and will be things like
brainstorming sessions, talks, or workshops and should be really useful for
your research.
During casual social meetings we might split off into small groups and chat
with one another, roundtable talk about how we're doing, maybe play board
games, or just drink coffee. It's fine if you show up a bit late or don't
come to all of these meetings.
This Tuesday we will have a research development style session watching a
CHI event put on by Waterloo HCI. The session is on AR and VR, which I know
not everybody researchers, but my favourite thing about conferences is the
exposure to different research from my own, and I hope we can emulate that.
Here's the plan and information:
WATCHI AR and VR Session 2020-05-19
-
Meet virtually (https://utoronto.zoom.us/j/96404556988) 15 minutes
before the AR and VR session starts (12:15pm). Watch the session together,
and then discuss the session at 1:25pm once it is over.
-
Watchi.live <http://watchi.live>
-
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7gjalaHF4E6C1CLTlKte6A/live
Going forward we are going to try using Zoom. The biggest benefit here is
we can use breakout rooms which might make socialising and some group
activities a bit easier.

If you have any ideas for future meetings feel free to add them to the
Google doc Vicky started:
https://tinyurl.com/hcimeetings
Also* if the meeting time doesn't work for you* please send me an email or
Slack message. I'd like to have the time work for as many people as
possible.
Best,
Blaine

Dear HCI Colleagues,
Hope you are in good health.
I am trying to put together a grant proposal (UofT internal) to develop an
accessible voice-based healthcare system for marginalized communities both
in Ontario and in the Global South. I already have partners from the Global
South, but I do not have many from UofT. If you find this proposal
interesting, I will be very happy to add you as my collaborator on this
proposal (and your required workload for this is close to zero).
I have attached the grant call to this mail. The deadline is April 1.
Here is the first draft of the proposal, and I will keep polishing it until
the deadline is over.

Please let me know if you are interested. Also, your comments, suggestions,
etc. are welcome.
Best Regards,
Ishtiaque

engagement with the COVID-19 response teams in Canada, Bangladesh, and

Hi Everyone,
There will be an HCI meeting on Tuesday, Zhicong has signed up to give his
practice job talk. Excited to see everybody there :)

PS: We don't have anything set in stone for next week except UIST paper
swaps but it feels a bit early for that. So sign something up in the doc if
you have ideas

Hi all,
Given the rapidly changing situation around COVID-19, I just wanted to make sure everyone in the lab is aware that you are strongly encouraged to work from home and attend meetings virtually. A lot of us do this already, to varying degrees. At this moment, no one is strictly required to work from home, but just a reminder that it is an option that I would encourage you to consider seriously.
Social distancing is one of the most effective means to avoid spreading of a disease, along with basic guidelines as follows.
Regardless of whether you decide to work from home, we do want to heavily encourage everyone to follow PHAC guidelines <https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronav…> for preparing and staying healthy:
Wash your hands with soap and water frequently (Handy graphical guide to best handwashing practices <https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fmaritimeprogress.com%2Fw…>)
If you are sick, stay home.
Practice good cough and sneeze etiquette (cough or sneeze into a tissue and throw the tissue right away, or the inside of your elbow and wash your hands immediately)
Avoid touching your face as much as possible, especially mouth, nose and eyes
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces (or, in lieu of this, wash your hands after touching such surfaces)
Please do let me know if you have any questions or concerns,
Best,
Fanny

“Conversational Commerce”
“Conversational Commerce” is a meme that just won’t seem to go away. And within conversational commerce the new buzzword is “empathy” – systems as diverse as smart speakers and websites that generate insurance quotes are said to be empathetic. However, as Inigo Montoya so aptly said “I do not think it means what you think it means.” In this talk I’ll discuss where conversational interfaces have come from, where they are today, and where they could go tomorrow if we learn how to really create bonds between computational systems and their users.
