Dear colleagues,

I’m excited to announce that Vera Khovanskaya, Jasmine Jones, and I are running a research summer school on Designing Technology for Social Impact this summer. This summer school, modelled on the classic “Values in Design” series which some of you may be familiar with (or went through yourself), targets graduate students and rising seniors who are from ethnically underrepresented minorities, with the goal of building a strong cohort of PhD students and eventual faculty in the area.

I am writing to ask you to send us your promising students! We will cover all travel costs. We are looking forward to having marvelous conversations about the social impact of technology and the uses and mis-uses of design interventions this summer.

Details are below - feel free to disseminate widely. A flyer for local hardcopy dissemination can be found here: https://impact.infosci.cornell.edu/social_impact_flyer.pdf

If this note should inspire you to wish to attend yourself, let’s be in touch and figure out what might be possible.

Best wishes,

Phoebe Sengers and Vera Khovanskaya

——————————————————

We invite you to apply to a research Summer School on Designing Technology for Social Impact (http://impact.infosci.cornell.edu).  In this week-long research program, students will explore how technologies express their designers' values, analyze what values and voices are commonly embodied in technology, and look at ways to design technologies to promote alternative perspectives and positive social impact. This program is targeted to graduate students and rising seniors who are underrepresented minorities. Our goal is to build a strong cohort of up-and-coming researchers working in this area and connect them to relevant research and faculty. Students from a variety of disciplines are invited to attend, including - but not restricted to - informatics, computer science, science and technology studies, communication, product design, and visual arts.

The program runs from June 18th-June 22nd, 2018 on our campus in Ithaca, NY. It is fully funded and provides for all travel costs from a home or internship, lodging and meals for student participants. Any student can apply for these programs, though we target underrepresented minorities. The application can be accessed here: https://cornell.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0kvZO8adltwKYJv or from the program website. The application deadline is Friday, Feb 23, 2018.

Please feel free to contact us at cis-diversityprograms@cornell.edu with any questions. This program is sponsored by Cornell Computing & Information Science.
