BTW, the subject line of this email says CSCW 2020; it should be CSCW 2019

Dear Group,

We have got 4 papers accepted to CSCW 2019 which is one of the top conferences in HCI: http://cscw.acm.org/2019/

The papers are:

1) "My cousin bought the phone for me. I never go to mobile shops": The Role of Family in Women's Technological Inclusion in Islamic Culture

This is a collaborative paper with our colleagues from Univ of Washington. In this paper, we studied how many Muslim women in Pakistan use mobile phones under a controlled environment, where each step of their use is governed by someone from their family.

2) “Parar-daktar Understands My Problems Better": Disentangling the Challenges to Designing Better Access to Healthcare in Rural Bangladesh

This paper is with Cornell friend, Sharifa (who is also here on this mailing list). This paper is about medical practices in rural Bangladesh. She showed how local people heavily rely on medical salespersons at the pharmacy shops instead of the actual doctors.

3) Of Ulti, 'hajano', and "Matachetar otanetak datam'': Exploring Local Practices of Exchanging Confidential and Sensitive Information in Urban Bangladesh

This paper is with a couple of my Bangladeshi collaborators. We discussed the idea of this paper is one of our group meetings if you can remember. This paper is about obfuscation - how general people try to hide their information in their day-to-day conversation using several techniques.

4) Trust and Technology Repair Infrastructures in the Remote Rural Philippines: Navigating Urban-Rural Seams

This paper was written with another group of researchers from Univ of Washington. This paper is about repairing mobile phones in remote rural Philippines. We documented the factors that make repairing challenging in such a situation.

I will share the papers with you once the final version is ready.

Overall, this year has been very productive for us with a good number of papers in various prestigious venues in our field. We hope we will have even more of them in the coming years. :)

Best Regards,
Ishtiaque
