Hi Everyone! Just a reminder we have an HCI research meeting tomorrow. The meeting will be split into two parts: *How to Run Brainstorming Sessions: * One of our awesome labmates, Nicole, will be giving the first presentation of the semester and she'll be talking about how to run effective brainstorming sessions with the group. This is a really important topic because going forward we want to see more people brainstorm to the DGP group as a whole. In the past this has been a really valuable opportunity to get your ideas out there and have people from a wide variety of backgrounds give constructive feedback. If you want to run a brainstorming session of your own please please send me an email and I can schedule you in, I think these are higher priority than most other things we do so I would love to see more of them. *Watch UIST Video Previews:* Next week is UIST! Social HCI Meeting

Hi Everyone!! Thanks again for attending the kickoff meeting! We'll be using this same time slot going forward for our weekly HCI Meetings. This week is a *social *meeting, which means we'll spend some time hanging out and being social. The current plan is to do a couple rounds of breakout rooms where we get to know one another and hang out, then afterwards we'll play jackbox games or something like that. While we've typically reserved the Tuesday lunchtime slot for this meeting, it appears there is at least one class that conflicts with this time. Hi Everyone! Next week we'll be doing a CHI Paper swap (Zhicong's idea + implementation), everybody will bring as much or as little as they want to have swapped and reviewed. Research HCI Meeting Today

Hi Everyone, Today we have a research based HCI meeting at 12:30pm EST. I’m starting to run out of things I can confidently talk about and teach, so I figure we’ll defer to people who really are experts in the field. Today we’ll be having a watch party of a video on how to do research. My suggestion is a seminar taught by Professor Carl Gutwin titled “How to write a CHI paper” https://vimeo.com/431504384 If anybody has other suggestions though I am super open to them, this video is 2 hours long, but we’ll probably just watch about 50 minutes of it and then leave some time for discussion. Research HCI Meeting Today

Hi Everyone! Today we have a research focused HCI meeting. This week we'll spend the first half having somewhat of a roundtable discussion around what forward progress in graduate studies mean, and why mental health is as much a part of research as learning to write an abstract. Then we'll finish off by going around and having a few lab members speak on what research they have been working on over the summer. If anybody has any other ideas for what we can do with these meetings or wants to use some of the time to do a group brainstorm please send me a message and we can arrange that! Best, Blaine

Let's try out calendar invites to this list, to see if we can be more organized. I just joined the HCI social and realized a big reason I miss it is because there isn't a calendar invite. E.g. it'd be great if we could have a calendar invite with the zoom link, and then whoever organizes it could just paste the agenda or any links into the body of the calendar invite. A few of us on the call discussed trying out calendar invites, and I convinced Blaine to give it a shot. Blaine for next week, can you try out sending an invite to hci(a)dgp.toronto.edu? I'm sure it will cause some chaos as some people use google, some outlook, and there are aliased sublists (e.g. my iai list, Khai's list, etc) But everyone, please just send polite & helpful info and screenshots of your user experience to Blaine and I. If we can figure out how to do calendaring, it'll be really helpful for lab organization. Any advice/suggestions/feedback welcome of course, with the understanding that I will be grateful for it, but not necessarily follow it (don't be too mad!), because of not understanding, not remembering, not having time, having other constraints, or a million other reasons!
