Subject: Monday Night Seminar: Platform Workers - Collectivities and
Organizing
To: Rafael Do Nascimento Grohmann <rafael.grohmann(a)utoronto.ca>
Dear colleagues, I'll be hosting the next Monday Night Seminar (my first
in-person event at UofT) on platform workers: collectivities and
organizing. Please join us and spread the word! Thanks.
Platform Workers: Collectivities and Organizing FEBRUARY 6, 6:00-8:00 PM
Join us at the Coach House on February 6th for a conversation between *Jennifer
Scott* (Gig Workers United) and *Dr. Moira Weigel *(Northeastern
University) focusing on the collective and organizing challenges of
platform workers. There is a myth that those who work through digital
platforms would be unorganized, yet recent history has shown this to be a
lie. There is a lot of evidence of workers' struggles in various sectors
(delivery, ride-hailing, micro-workers, tech workers, care work, creators,
streamers, e-commerce) around the world.
Together in a conversation moderated by *Rafael Grohmann* (University of
Toronto), we explore several questions:
- What working conditions have platform workers been subjected to in
recent years?
- What has already been built in terms of solidarity among workers?
- What is needed to push and guarantee decent work?
- What alternatives are on the horizon in relation to public policies?
Workers, unions and worker collectives from all sectors are welcome.
This Monday Night Seminar is organized by the Centre's Selfhood,
Identities, and Collectivities of Platform Workers Working Group.

*Time:* November 30, 10am to 11:30am EST
*Abstract:* Information has fundamentally reshaped development discourse
and practice. This talk will examine the political implications of the idea
of information for poverty alleviation. Drawing on ethnographic and
archival research on three cases from India—the circulation of price
information in a fish market in Kerala, the provision of government
information in computer kiosks operated by a nonprofit in Puducherry, and a
political campaign demanding a right to information in Rajasthan—the talk
will counter claims that information is naturally and universally
empowering. It will demonstrate, instead, how the production and leveraging
of information -- and its very definition -- are shaped by caste, class,
and gender.
*Bio:* Janaki Srinivasan is Associate Professor, International Institute of
Information Technology Bangalore (IIITB), and the convenor of the
Institute’s Centre for Information Technology and Public Policy (CITAPP).
Her research examines the politics of information technology-based
development. Her work has shown how gender, class and caste shape Indian
digital inclusion initiatives focussed on community computer centres,
mobile phones, identity systems and open information systems. Currently,
she is exploring privacy, algorithmic control and fairness in platform
work. Janaki earned her PhD in Information Management and Systems from the
University of California Berkeley. The Political Lives of Information is
her first book.

*Website:* https://www.dnemer.com/

*Time:* 28 September, 2022 from 11AM - 12.30 PM, EST
*Abstract:* In this seminar, David Nemer discusses how Brazilian favela
residents engage with and appropriate technologies, both to fight the
oppression in their lives and to represent themselves in the world.
Brazilian favelas are impoverished settlements usually located on hillsides
or the outskirts of a city. In his latest book, Technology of the
Oppressed, David Nemer draws on extensive ethnographic fieldwork to provide
a rich account of how favela residents engage with technology in community
technology centers and in their everyday lives. Their stories reveal the
structural violence of the information age. But they also show how those
oppressed by technology don't just reject it, but consciously resist and
appropriate it, and how their experiences with digital technologies enable
them to navigate both digital and nondigital sources of oppression—and
even, at times, to flourish. Nemer uses a decolonial and intersectional
framework called Mundane Technology as an analytical tool to understand how
digital technologies can simultaneously be sites of oppression and tools in
the fight for freedom. Building on the work of the Brazilian educator and
philosopher Paulo Freire, he shows how the favela residents appropriate
everyday technologies—technological artifacts (cell phones, Facebook),
operations (repair), and spaces (Telecenters and Lan Houses)—and use them
to alleviate the oppression in their everyday lives. He also addresses the
relationship of misinformation to radicalization and the rise of the new
far right. Contrary to the simplistic techno-optimistic belief that
technology will save the poor, even with access to technology these
marginalized people face numerous sources of oppression, including
technological biases, racism, classism, sexism, and censorship. Yet the
spirit, love, community, resilience, and resistance of favela residents
make possible their pursuit of freedom.
*Bio:* David Nemer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media
Studies at the University of Virginia. He is a Faculty Associate at Harvard
University's Berkman Klein Center, a Visiting Scholar in The Institute for
Rebooting Social Media, and an Affiliated Scholar at Princeton University's
Brazil Lab. Nemer is the author of Technology of the Oppressed (MIT Press,
2022) and Favela Digital: The other side of technology (Editora GSA, 2013).
He holds a MA in Anthropology from the University of Virginia, an MS in
Computer Science from Saarland University, and a Ph.D. in Computing,
Culture, and Society from Indiana University. Nemer has written for The
Guardian, El País, The Huffington Post (HuffPost), Salon, and The

extremely valuable tools for collaborating, creating, learning, and having
fun. Digital games can provide unique forums where kids can exercise their
agency and engage in a meaningful shared cultural experience. In many
cases, however, this potential is diminished by the prioritization of
commercialization and the enrollment of child users into big data
economies. In this talk, I present four tendencies that dominate and shape
the child-specific commercial digital play landscape: a deep disconnect
between hegemonic articulations of children’s privacy and children’s need
for autonomous spaces and interactions; a lack of support for children’s
freedom of expression online and its positioning in opposition to
children’s “safety”; unanswered questions about who owns children’s digital
content and shared culture; and the problematic application of both
traditional and emerging models of corporate control, monetization, and
commercialization to artifacts designed and targeted to young children. The
prevalence of these tendencies has profound implications for children’s
digital play, sense of “self” (identities), and rights. I argue that the
concretization of these tendencies as design features and quasi-legal
“rules of play” highlights the urgent need for a cross-sector collaboration
aimed at better supporting children's rights and interests in connected
play environments.
*Bio:* Dr. Sara M. Grimes is Director of the Knowledge Media Design
Institute (KMDI) and Semaphore Labs and Associate Professor in the Faculty
of Information at the University of Toronto. Her research and teaching are
centred in the areas of children’s digital media culture(s) and critical
theories of technology, with a focus on digital games. Her published work
explores the commercialization of children’s play culture and creative
expression, discussions of intellectual property and fair dealing in
child-specific digital environments, as well as the legal and ethical
dimensions of marketing to children online. Her new book, Digital
Playgrounds: The Hidden Politics of Children’s Online Play Spaces, Virtual
Worlds, and Connected Games, was published by the University of Toronto
Press in August 2021. Community outreach is a core part of Dr. Grimes’s
professional practice, and she regularly speaks at media/cultural industry
conferences, participates in policy consultations, and engages in action
research projects and cross-sector partnerships. Recently, Professor Grimes
was awarded a three-year SSHRC Insight Grant to lead a new trans-national,
cross-sector research collaboration entitled Children and Age-Appropriate
Game Design: Children’s and Developers’ Experiences of How Digital Games
are Classified, Rated and Designed for Children. This project will revisit
how children’s games are regulated in both Canada and the UK, particularly
around questions of children’s privacy and other rights, and the ethics of
in-game advertising and monetization.
