Subject: Reading news from home Date: Mon, 18 Nov 1996 16:33:57 GMT From: lloyd@cdfpc.toronto.edu ("Lloyd Smith") The news server CDF-PC uses has recently been reconfigured to allow reading from outside of DCS. This means that students with Internet access from other sources may read the CDF and CDF-PC newsgroups from home. To read from home, configure your news reader to use the NNTP server "newssrv.cdf.toronto.edu". Naturally, exactly how to do this depends on the software you are using. Check your owner's manual or other documentation. You will be able to read the approx. 75 groups in the heirarchy ut.cdf.*. Notes: 1> You will be able to read *ONLY* the ut.cdf.* heirarchy. Use your normal NNTP server to read other groups. 2> You will not be able to post through your software as the server will not accept external postings. To post, do as you would at CDF-PC, i.e. send mail to the newsgroup @cdf.toronto.edu (eg to post to ut.cdf.csc123h, send mail to ut.cdf.csc123h@cdf.toronto.edu). 3> A student pointed out the aliases in the "System Aliases" address book were incorrect. They have been corrected, so mail to just the newsgroup name will work for the groups used most often by CDF-PC: ut.cdf.csc104h ut.cdf.csc108h ut.cdf.csc148h ut.cdf.csc270h ut.cdf.csc340h ut.cdf.pc.announce ut.cdf.pc.general ut.cdf.pc.gripes ut.cdf.test It is still possible to post to any group carried by newssrv.cdf (the groups you see when you select "View all newsgroups") by sending mail to the newsgroup@cdf as above) 4> You will need a Internet account with an ISP, most likely from home or an employer. It is doubtful that you will be able to reconfigure the public access machines in various places on campus.
